i was playing as the celts in the middle ages, i went to upgrade my gallic swordsman to medieval infantry, the screen informed me that i can upgrade it for 0 gold.
has this happened to anyone?
Yes, the formula for upgrading results in the Gallic Swordsman "upgrading" to Medieval Inf. for free. That should tell you that the GS is a better unit than the MI.
You lose shields upgrading them to med inf. It's cheaper to upgrade them straight to guerilla, than to step through med inf, because a G.S. is actually more shields than a med inf - the upgrade cost is usually the shield difference, but that would mean you'd get money back for upgrading the swordsmen.
In a fightin' game, an army of Gallic Swords has a long useful life. In the ancient age, it's like having an actual tank to fight with back then.
Actually building a GS cost you 50 shields while a MI would cost you 40 shields.
Upgrade cost is IIRC is 2 Gold per shield, but in your case, you are LOOSING 10 shields, so it look like to be free but in fact you are loosing 20 gold!
Also, as every body already reported the GS is a better Unit than MI (the GS retreats and move faster).
GS 3.2.2.(Attack.Defense.Move)
MI 4.2.1. so you change 1 attack against 1 move and the ability to retreat.
