The guys from Longturn have announced on social media that their custom Freeciv version now has a rudimentary support for Civ2 scenarios (see here).
It is rather limited, as e.g. custom rule sets are not supported, and a range of other customizations are not loaded, but it's a start .

Lol you beat me to it as I was just about to post a thread about this.

The story behind this is kinda funny. I was on the FreeCiv longturn discord posting about some of my recent Civ2 mods, one of the FreeCiv devs Kaaos took an interest and we discussed the possibility of FreeCiv supporting Civ2 scenarios and mods. I've had many people suggest it on social media posts over the years but figured it was in the too hard basket and never bothered to ask/pester them about it. However Kaaos felt it was doable and has started the ball rolling on making it a reality which is very cool. :)

As The_J says custom rulesets are not supported yet and custom graphics take some tinkering (ie conversion to FreeCiv's format) to load up so pretty much most scenarios won't work. However vanilla or simple scenario scn and sav files from MGE should hopefully load okay now. Complicated total conversion MGE scenarios will likely have serious issues and ToT files are incompatible at this stage.

There's a pre-release of the new version with the Civ2 loading features people can try here:
