As I have been cruising through old threads, I've noticed in a few places some of you mention "cashing in" your freight/caravans for science. Is there a way to do this?

Every camel and every truck that delivers products (instead of food, instead of being "used for a wonder", instead of being disbanded) receives coins as a reward. At the same time, but not as famous, an EQUAL amount of beakers are applied to the current research. So a payoff of 244 is an increase to the treasury of 244 coins and an increase to the research effort of 244 beakers.

If you have only a few beakers left to discover something and you establish a trade route and you get more beakers than you need to discover something, would the remaining beakers carry over?

No. And, caravan/freight delivery alone cannot 'give' you the tech either, so you would need to have at least some science production from your cities to 'rollover' the tech so it can be discovered. Thia can be done by setting some of your tax to produce science, or by making a worker a scientist specialist.

I really need to read the manual sometime. :crazyeye:

Hey that's a nice feature double bonus from one caravan. Why nobody told me this before? Hmm now I began to think the caras aren't that useless after all ;)

I'm the guy which produces military all the time, than conquer the world. This way you also get a nice tax/science bonus ;) with all the captured cities.

Well the only time I looked at the manual was after I bought the game, I looked at all the nice leader-pictures and thought: well, nice :)

Afterwards I threw it into a corner (which I believe it is there till today :) ) and wohoo jumped into the action, woow did I get a beating the first days :) but now I think I'm doing quite well ;)

I agree with you: it's more fun to play :scan:
But you will notice after a while that you cannot become a good player without a fair knowledge of 'how it works', and that requires some reading (either the manual or this forum, ... or preferably both  ).
