I have tried lots of times to try to make good friends with certain civs. I give them tributes and help them out with wars even if I don't stand a chance of winning. Does anybody know how to build up a relationship like Britian and USA have (and they had a war!).

It all depends on the civ you're trying to brown-nose. Civs like America and India are easily appeased, but the Aztecs and English are way vindictive.

Trade with civs often. It doesn't matter if you buy from them, or they buy from you, but be generous in these trades. If you could sell the English a luxury for 10 gold/turn, sell it to them for 5 gold/turn instead. In wars, they usually are polite if you are an ally. They will be Gracious if they had previous problems with the mutual enemy civ and/or you do most of the damage. I used to let other civs do most of the fighting and almost never had anyone gracious, then I started doing most of the fighting by capturing cities and would get some of my allies as Gracious. Don't ever Raze a city, though! If you capture some useless city that's way too far from your capital and it was formerly owned by another civ, give it back to them as a gift.

IMO, the easiest way to make civs gracious to you is enter a military alliance with them against someone and do more than half of the work. Give them the utterly useless cities that are reeking with the horrid stench of corruption. (big words eh?) After the war is over and your foes are ashes beneath your feet, they should be gracious. When that happens, they do all kinds of magnificent stuff. It's so fun to have the Russians take over the world for the Americans :P
