Level?

I'm currently testing myself at Regent. I will play a Monarch game to completion soon enough.

I just started Diety. Lost my first game. If its too tough, I'll move back to Demi-god.

I confess - I play Chieftain. I could play higher, but I want to learn how to play well at this level before moving up. If I can learn to do all the right things at Chieftain (talk to all the AIs each turn; micro-manage my workers and citizens; build cities rapidly in the early years; only build improvements that are needed or else build soldiers; plan what to research and why; plan when to fight and why and for how long, and most importantly, have a plan of how I want to win); if I can do these things well at Chieftain, then moving up a level or two (or more) becomes easier.

In other words, I consider Chieftain to be boot camp, with the War Academy as my drill instructor and the forums to be eavesdropping on the sergeants' conversations in the NCO club.

Hi Breunor.

Try out my strategy: Winning on Deity Builder style, step-by-step. It's on my signature. Guaranteed win (well, with some practice that is ;) ). It's devised for Deity Noobs.

I can play on Sid but I find it quite borring. It just comes down to war all the time. I prefer builder-style games at levels anywhere from Emperor to Deity.

BTW, please keep polls private. I don't mind talking about poll options but I hate seeing names next to them. They should be only used for "official" votes like in demogames.

Same over here. I really enjoy myself warmongering at Emperor and Deity, as a builder. Sid takes long and an awful lot of planning to get everything right.

You're right, I've spellt it wrong. ;)

Warmongering at Emperor and builder at Deity. That's really when I have the most fun. Not so much MM'g.

I can vouch for Drakan's article. I was having difficulty moving up as a builder. I am breezing through my first successful DG game and feel I am ready to try Diety when I catch up to RL.

I don't find Sid boring. Sure there's lots of MM and turns take longer, but its a fun challenge. You can no longer get far ahead in tech, then waltz in with your superior units. It would give me most satsifaction to one day beat sid.

Sid is also fun when it comes to war. Getting lots of armies is fun.

Believe me. I used to think that way too, until I actually crawled my way through a Sid game. The tech pace grinds almost to a halt because you have to play archipellago to stop inter-civ contacts. It's impossible to build a wonder without heavily pre-building, and only on techs that the AI is not going to get until much later than you, and even then it's only with tremendous luck and by a very small margin. All AIs are broke from the 500+ units they need to support. They just keep declaring war on everybody else and you are basically just managing huge SODs the entire game. Even the many leaders just become a chore when you have to manually attack 200 times every turn so that any leader can be used before the next attack. You do nothing else than micro-manage a huge war.

Trust me. Sid-level ain't fun at all.

I play on regent, mainly cause im lazy and cant be bothered doing all that micromanaging. But i have played sid difficulty once. That was before i moved up past cheiftian. I got my a$$ whipped.

Emperor. One day (preferably before Civ4 comes out!!), it will be DG....

I have no desire to play above emporer. Monarch is fairly easy, sometimes hard, depending on the situation. Regent is a given, and what I play when I want to have fun.

I've finally cracked Demigod, got a builder and a warmonger game under my belt. Time for Deity, I think. Just trying to work out if I should take a 'Sid start' - byzantine arcipelago - or just go random.

Used to beat the occasional Deity game on play the world, but burned out and took 9 months off Civ. Unfortunately degrading my skills rather badly.
