From Chieftain to Sid

Currently playing Emperor (voted Emperor), but thinking of taking the next step.

Thats good news. I remember when I started Demi-god, it was hard as hell

I'm on my first emperor game now, and I was getting completely outexpanded. I had 3 cities while the AI had 7-8. Then my two nearest neighbors, the Spanish and the Egyptians, decided to fight a 1500 year war lasting 35-40 turns. They completely exhausted each other and I was able to conquer them both. Persia on another continent eliminated all of the other Civs. However, I have the tech lead but not enough time to build the Space Ship. It's 2015 now and I have 200 more tiles I need to conquer from Persia to achieve domination. It's going to be close

I play Sid...... Only still no victory. But I'm close .

I think you should add wha settings the game are. There are palyers who play a given level but only on great maps. They would be 1 or 2 levels lower on a random map. Emperor is really easy with a couple of cows and some luxes, but without those, it can be a challange.

I mostly play emperor, will occasionally go for higher levels (up to Sid) for a challenge, but find I want to go back to emperor because it is the most enjoyable.

I got several victories on Deity large maps. but I like Emporer more because its more balanced and gives you the opportunity to build wonders.
For some reason I have never tried Demi-God or Sid.

Believe me. I used to think that way too, until I actually crawled my way through a Sid game. The tech pace grinds almost to a halt because you have to play archipellago to stop inter-civ contacts. It's impossible to build a wonder without heavily pre-building, and only on techs that the AI is not going to get until much later than you, and even then it's only with tremendous luck and by a very small margin. All AIs are broke from the 500+ units they need to support. They just keep declaring war on everybody else and you are basically just managing huge SODs the entire game. Even the many leaders just become a chore when you have to manually attack 200 times every turn so that any leader can be used before the next attack. You do nothing else than micro-manage a huge war.

I'm surprised so many people play Sid (or 'beyond Sid'). I have enough trouble with the mid levels.

I play on Emperor level winning two out of three with standard sized maps and random opponents/barbs/topography. When I win five in a row, I move up one level.

I uesed to play on Demigod now I play on Deity, I have played on Sid only once and it was the only time where I honestly lost. I hate nuclear weapons

Guilty of playing Chieftain. Just got back into Civ3 again... working my way up back to Warlord-Emperor (where I used to be.) It's been about 1 and a half years since I was into the game

Black Flag, I suggest you read some articles in the war academy and some of the legendary games (thread in stories and tales). Those have brought me from never won regent to doing ok at a sid game. Good luck with your rebuilding your skill .

You survived to Modern Age on Sid?

I haven't done that yet, but I think that victory is mine if I get there.

That would be an incredible feat, but I think his opponents survived to the modern ages. If you got that far, why would sid not be the only difficulty you ever play?

Oh, yeah, that is not that incredible. I can do that too!

Speaking of bell curve (it's called Gauss curve, BTW), there is a "hole" at DG. I think it's because many players skip it, with a single reason, because it's not in Civ3/PTW.
