fuddled text

Ok I'm completely stumped. I've been editing C3C. My text in the civilopedia or about anywhere for that metter has the double quotation mark throughout it.
First all my text files are opening in excel spreadsheet format, I'm assuming this is whats suppossed to happen. That means all the text files are tab delinimated. An FYI the text in the pedia, etc in non-modified games is just fine(go figure). So I make the changes save and get a message saying not compatible, format things not compatible will not be saved. I look at help and determine that any lines with commas in them get surrounded by the " mark. I think this is why the text is all goofy looking.
I cannot figure out a way to fix or go around this. I've tried saving in different formats with no success. I've tried changing the delimantion format in the files when they are open, etc.
For some reason I cannot search the forums to see if this has been addressed so I'm left posting this question.

I hope I've given enough info for soomeone to understand, if not I'll add to it as the need arises.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, any editing I do in any of the text files I do with Notepad. I have found it to be less of a hassle that way.

If you mean that you double-click the text file and it opens in excel, then it is an issue with your windows set-up, NOT conquests! Best to right-click and go 'open with', and choose notepad.exe, or wordpad.exe.
