a workboat can't ever reach the important square tho. that would frustrate the heck out of perfectionist-city-obsessed me.

You'll need to seek help for that. ;)

Pieter, you answer your own question. You can't succeed at Civ by concentrating on only 1 technology path. You need to research military technologies in addition to economy and religion. Try this:

1. Research Mining, then Bronze working.
2. While you're doing that, train a settler, then a warrior and a settler.
3. Hook up copper to your trade network.
4. Build a bunch of axemen, find your nearest neighbor and capture his capitol.
5. Now you can spend some beakers on economic technologies.

The worst city building recommendation ever!!!

I would go 1 tile NW and gain the copper too. Also, that way you get instant silver. Whereas recommended, you get nothing in the first drop. Although, It is a horrible site altogether.

which lucky one are you?

Istanbul hosted the Olympics a record 6 times, mainly because all the medals could be produced locally. However, the Ottomans had not counted on the Zulu reaction when Istanbul got the games for the seventh time instead of Ulundi...

oh, and indeed, also 2 clam, and banana and cow, and the other two minerals are just out of reach. Mindboggling starting position.

I've been stuck on big islands lately and have had to settle for space race victories as I am way behind technologically without any tech trades until someone finds me with a caravel. My solution is to sign lots of DP's and bribe people into attacking each other.

The Capac screenshot I find funny because I asked Cyrus to attack him, and Cyrus at least considered it, replying "we would have nothing to gain." Poor Capac, Cyrus isn't quite as steadfast of a friend as you think he is. ;)

The huge list of war declarations was because so many civs were either in DPs or vassals that it only took a little bribing by me to start off a chain reaction. I saved the game at that point and took a screenshot... World War I. ;)

Let us know how it turns out!

If that referred to World War I, well, a little backstory to that s/s:

China had long ago vassalized Aztec. Egypt had this weird on-again-off-again vassalization thing with Inca, so I think it was a voluntary vassalization and not capitulation.

I couldn't believe it when I saw that Ghandi had finished Apollo when I didn't even have Rocketry yet. China, the 800-pound gorilla of the big continent who had already vassalized Montezuma, was big but also a little behind technologically. So I bribed him with a tech to fight India to slow India's spaceship construction. Unfortunately China steamrolled India pretty quickly and vassalized it. And India just kept building SS parts! Worse, other civs were starting to get Apollo.

Result: I had to trigger World War I in the hopes that it would slow them all down. The China-Aztec-Indian team took on the Egypt-Incan team, and I also bribed China to attack Japan which was isolationist, to make it a fairer fight. But I think they might have had a DP with Egypt anyway; I can't remember, this was one of my older s/s when I was still learning the game.

Instead of slowing down the big continent, I just gave China an excuse to eat everyone. China started with Egypt, which lost three cities before it capitulated to China. That broke the Egypt-Inca vassal relationship, and Inca became a noncombatant, not that it mattered since they were too far behind to be a real Apollo threat anyway. China then turned to Japan and ate some cities, so Japan became China's vassal.

The game ended with my spaceship launch at some really late year like 1966 or something because I had mismanaged my island and to make matters worse, I was way behind due to the isolated start (no tech trades, no tech discounts for knowing civs that already have techs that I've not yet researched). However, nobody else had the more advanced SS parts built by the time I launched, because of World War I and the ensuing chaos. China did have a whopping FOUR vassals by the end of the game, though: Aztec, India, Egypt, and Japan!
