I have a fresh install of Vanilla and Warlords through Steam. Attempting to play GOTM 21 or WOTM 12 results in a "The save file you have selected is protected to ensure that the assets in your mod folder have not been changed." error.

Like I said, its a fresh install and I haven't installed any mods other than HOF. The HOF mods are the right version (1.74.001 and 2.13.001).

Is there a known workaround to this issue or anyway I can get a more in-depth error message to further diagnose the cause of this problem?

Thanks

Well that sucks.

I was able to play GOTM 20 using HOF 1.61.011 and WOTM 11 using HOF 2.08.004 without any problems (on Steam).

Is anyone looking into whether Steam/BTS/HOF is responsible for breaking compatibility with Steam installs?

Nope. I was running XP then and I'm running it now.

Thanks for the quick responses!

from what I've read in the HOF forum, the BtS version from Steam shows up as modded compared to a normal install, whether trying to use the HOF mod, or in multiplayer games...I'm not sure how close they are to a fix though.

This is really annoying. Is there any way you can make the save available in a non-mod format so steam users can at least play it, if not submit their game?

Not while the live game is running ... or only if we buy the Steam version  and create another start file with assets locked to that version.

You should be able to download the WorldBuilder save after the game is finished and results are published. That will play in any version. It's linked on the Results page, at the top of the table.
