during era transition, u get a free tech....

hunt for the tech that transitions u to the next era and buy it at whatever price from a non-scientific civ. it has to be a non-scientifc civ.
once u get the free tech, trade it right back to that civ and u will most likely recoupe the cost of the original tech. trade the original tech to the other civs starting from the wealthy non-scientic ones so that ur free tech is then only known to one other civilisation and so does not degrade in value. trade for both the transition tech and the free tech as long as they are willing to pay a small fortune. ...then and only then, trade to the scientific ones.

For me, once one civ gets a tech, half the world has it on the same turn, regardless if they're generating any per turn income or not. 2-3 turns later, everbody but the poor civ who started in the 20 tiles of desert has it, and Hiawatha doesn't have anything to give me. ;)

Upon entering the middle ages, i can't even sell monotheism because nobody has any money to give for it. Since all of the scientific civs entered the middle ages at the same time, its also worth significantly less.

In the industrial and modern ages this is possible though, as tech brokering returns as soon as the player is able to easily out-research the AI.
