Comrade Ryanbgstl,

You do not mention what you have specifically tried so I'll cover a couple of things that you may have already done. First let's start with the basics.....

1. I would recommend purchasing, if you don't have one already, a namebrand "Windoctor" utility. Essentially what this program does is go through the windows files and settings looking for something amiss. The first time I ran my Norton Windoctor I was stunned at the volume of issues and conflicts. Fortunately for me Win95 kept chugging along, though it's performance had deteriorated somewhat. No matter how careful you are in uninstalling, even with the Uninstall Wizard, debris is left behind. Orphhaned Dlls, Registry values, and even whole files get left behind. This can accumulate and begin to choke your system, as it did mine. A "Windoctor" utility will clear up that mess and have you lean and mean again. It will really help narrow down the issues if you know your registry is in good shape. In any event it is a good idea for your PC in general. Personally, I think it the best software purchase I've made. I should warn you I have read that there are issues with CIV III and Symantec's "Norton" line of products. I have Norton's and that may be why I am having problems but I have yet to determine if Norton's is at fault. I would recommend you consider another brand just to be on the safe side.

2.Clean up your hard drive by running a deframentation utility. Windows comes with one that should do the trick. It can really make a difference. I would recommend uninstalling CIV III before hand and re-install when you have a freshly defragmented hard drive.

3. I too have an Nvidia graphics card. It is my understanding that all Nvidia cards are optimized for Open GL, though they do a great job of supporting Direct X. CIV III uses Direct X not open GL. Some of your Nvidia graphics options may not be set to currently maximize Direct X or may even be in conflict. Settings such as stencil buffering, trilinear filtering, anisotropic filtering, and anti-aliasing can have a big impact on graphics performance in either mode. Check those settings, lower them if necessary, and see if that improves animation speed.

I suspect your issue lies somewhere in number 3 above. Given the problems that many of us have had with CIV III, I would definitely consider CIV III an almost equal suspect. I hope this helps.

Your Comrade,

Vladimir
