I've played two games w GEM so far, and in both I've experienced a game breaking bug. Around the late Renaissance Era, I find myself unable to select new production in one of my cities and, therefore, unable to advance to the next turn, making it impossible to continue the game.
I tried to kickstart the game back into action: cycling between cities, switching between cities and units, choosing new production in other cities, opening and closing different menus. None of this fixed the stuck city. All other aspects of the game worked fine--save one. I could select and move units w no problem; I could choose new production in other cities; I could make contact w other civs; etc. The other aspect that didn't work is that I could no longer open the Social Policies menu.
I've gone through the common checklist, and those steps do not solve the problem. A different solution has worked, though: using the In-Game Editor mod to delete and manually rebuild the city in question. With one caveat, this fixes both issues, allowing me to choose new production and to open the Social Policies menu. The caveat is that the error would resume if I manually add back all the buildings that were in the city when the error originally occurred. I experimented w this a lot to see if I could isolate one offending building or a maximum number of buildings after which the error would recur, and there seemed to be no consistency. Sometimes the error would occur after adding eight buildings; sometimes after nine. Sometimes it would occur after adding a Castle; sometimes a University. It did seem to happen after around seven to ten buildings, but buildings from a given era were neither more nor less likely to make the bug resume. All this leads me to believe the error has something to do w GEM's added buildings, but I'm not certain.
It was like the game thought this city was simultaneously a puppet and a non-puppet--and in fact, using the IGE to change the city type to 'Puppet' also resolved the issue. (This isn't a great solution, though, as I'd rather not surrender control of this city's production for the rest of the game.) After manual reconstruction using the IGE, I could select new production as normal for the rest of the game.
A friend told me this bug exists in unmodded G&K, but I personally haven't experienced it until these first two games of GEM.
I love this mod. The balance is superb and the additional content is truly inspired. Now I'd just like to be able to finish a game! Help!
