Game Crash when loading another game during play

Notes on game conditions:

1. European (English) version of game
2. Playing Normal BTS game (warlord difficulty, 6 rivals, fractal map etc.)
3. Currently the file I play is mid game 1540AD

Game crashes consistently for me when I do the following:

1. Load my game from the opening BTS menu (1540 AD file)
2. Play a few rounds
3. hit ESC to get overall menu on the game screen
4. hit load a game from the menu
5. try to load any of my previous game saves from an earlier time period (same game as the one in progress).

The game tries to load the new game and crashes. I have repeated this several times.

Anyone else have this problem? Any further details I could add to the post for the developers to be more useful?

I've expirienced crashes when I try to load games while playing, had to restart the game everytime I loaded...

Same problem here.

Loading a previous save from within the game crashes to desktop. I have to restart and then I can load the save from the main menu fine but loading from within the game crashes.

The OP basically gave the steps. Load a game, play a few turns then try to load the previous save. Game crashes almost every time. If it doesnt crash the first time, try again.

It happens to me occasionally too. I can't seem to find any way to predictably get it to crash. Sometimes it CtDs, other times it loads just fine. The save games aren't corrupted, per se, as they will always load fine from the main menu.

Sounds like a reasonably serious error. If anyone can provide some steps to reliably reproduce this, then it would be a great help.

I've only played for a few hours, but whenever I load a saved game after playing a while (you know - to recover from a blunder) BTS crashes (Microsoft crash window). Yet when I restart the game and load the same file, it works fine and I continue fine until I try to back up to a save again.

I have the same problem. It is really annoying. It happened the first time after the installation of Blue Marble, but only once in a while. I removed Blue Marble and HOF Mod but nothing changed, so I reinstalled both. Things got worse (crash every 2nd/3rd reload).
I started a new game. At the beginning everything fine, but after some time of playing it got worse. At the moment it’s reliable that is crashes at every reload attempt from within the game. Reload from the main menu or directly starting the save file is always fine.

I reinstalled BtS, without Blue Marble but with HOF, nothing changed (tried also version 3.02, same thing).
So I think:

1. Against my first guess the fact that it happened first time after the installation of Blue Marble is NOT a pure coincidence. But this would implicate that Blue Marble leaves his traces in the savegame file (!!?) or
2. It’s a problem with Solver’s component in HOF Mod or
3. It’s a system issue

But the weird thing is that apparently only very few people are experiencing this problem. I mean, lot of people are playing with Blue Marble and HOF Mod/Solver’s patch ...

Actually I’m reinstalling Civ4, Warlords and BtS completely from the scratch.

OK. Reinstalled everything, updated to 3.02, installed HOF Mod. Old savegame same problem as before: not reloadable from within the game. I started a new game and "clicked me through" till turn 100, made some save-reloads. So far everything is working good with the new game.

This makes me really *guess* that Blue Marble screwed up my installation somehow which resulted in a partially corrupted save file.

But I still have to play a new game further than turn 100 to confirm this. It still exists the possibility that f.e. Solver's modifications write something bad to the save file at a certain point, e.g. related to a specific event in the game (wonder, diplomacy, unit related stuff etc.).

But the fact that the problem is only a problem of *how* to reload (from within the game or from the main menu) makes me really think that it is something related only to graphics/interface.

I do not have any mods of any kind and I crash to desktop trying to load saves also.

I've gotten in the habit of exiting to the main menu first and then loading the save from the main menu. Works fine that way, just an extra step.

You are right. Meanwhile I've started another new game on the fresh BtS installation. No Blue Marble, only HOF mod, and the problem reappeared the first time at about turn 180. So I can exclude definitifly Blue Marble as the culprit.

This is really annoying, especially because quick reloads are my best friends;)

I have attached one of those unloadable save games. Maybe somebody could try if he can load this save (from within the game) without a crash.

I have no mods installed and anytime I try to load from inside a game. WHAMMO! Crash to desktop.

I have tried with both standard saves (multiple saves, so it is not a corrupt save file issue) and auto saves (once again, with multiple files).

I am not even patched to 3.03, i am playing 3.00. 3.03 seems to be buggy unto itself.

What is going on with all the problems? I don't remember Civ 4 nor Warlords having these problems.

System: Intel E6600, NVidia 7950 GS (512 megs), 2 gig ram, onboard sound

Try downloading the 3.02 patch from Firaxis' website, maybe that helps. 3.03 is really not recommended ;)
Does it produce any error message, e.g. a windows error report when crashing?

I get the standard WinXP "Do you wish to send this Microsoft" crash box. I will look at the details of the log file and post them if 3.02 doesn't fix everything for me.

Well...3.02 didn't really fix anything.
