I've been playing civ 4 for a while now and it's always worked fine. I've had a couple of month's away and the other night it just stopped working. I can play anywhere from 2 to 10 turns and then it crashes to a black screen were the mouse is still visible but nothing else, then it hard crashes and I have to reboot the computer. I've got all the latest drivers for my video and sound cards. I've got a Radeon 9800 Pro and using direct X 9.0c. Any help would be great.

Sorry, forgot to include that. I've tried multiple uninstall and re-installs with the 1.61 patch, as well as several system restore's to earlier points with no luck. It's really bugging me as it was working fine a couple of months ago and had been since I got it.

Join the club man. I've been having the same problems and have been posting about it. I've tried the same things you have. I have 2 GeForce cards in SLI mode and even tried removing one of them. No reason my comp should crash playing this game. My conclusion, unless someone can prove me otherwise, is that the game is pretty flawed, at least for nvidia video cards anyways.

What I don't get is that it was working fine for like 6 months and then all of a sudden, nothing!

Hmmm . . . Very bizarre. The exact same thing is now happening to me. I have been playing CivIV and Warlords on this laptop for a year and a half with no problems. I was last playing on July 4, and it crashed after several hours of playing. (I was playing the Fall from Heaven mod for the first time -- after reading about it in connection with the upcoming BTS expansion, so I am wondering whether something in that caused it?) Ever since then, I cannot play more than a turn or two (if that) before the screen freezes, turns black (sometimes still with the mouse showing), and then completely crashes. I tried completely reloading Windows on the computer (among other things) and completely reloading CivIV, and the problem still persists.

Since it does not look like it is Windows, I am wondering whether my video card just somehow became corrupted?

Highly unlikely as so many are having this problem. Like I said in another thread, I think it only occurs on huge maps... allthough for a long time I havn't had an issue until now. So I'm not really sure lol

Nah, for me it has now started happening even in the pre-game set-up phase, after about a minute or so, before I even get the map generated. The problem just seems to be getting worse (and I have not played the large map recently since before the problem began).

I would be VERY careful about this issue. I tried to play through my Civ4 addiction despite it randomly reseting my computer, crashing etc. Well, I paid the price, big-time. My desktop did not come back up properly after one of Civ4's random crash/resets and now I have a hardware failure somewhere. I can't tell yet if it is my motherboard, RAM, or hard disk. Either way, this damn game cost me a lot of money. Don't make the same mistake as me. I have, er rather had, a decent performance desktop too. Now I'll be selling off the working parts of it to help build a new one :(

Sad thing was not long before this happend I read another person's post about how they were going to stop playing because it wasn't worth their computer dying.

Wow that's too bad. I guess I'll just be playing small games for now, since they arn't causing me any problems. At least until BtS comes out which they *claim* to have a fix for the memory allocation failure.
