Game Freezes

I'm a big fan of all of the Civ games and up to now I never had a problem with one of them, until I bought Civ IV. I've tried to play it a couple of times and everytime I'm in the game for 30 minutes it crashes to the my desktop or completely reboots. Can someone tell me what my problem is? I'm using the ATI Radeon X850 Platinum and I have 1 GIG of DDR400 Ram and AMD Athlon 4000+ 64 bit dual core processor. Any help please..........

Between myself, and several friends, we have now installed civ 4 on 7 computers. Oddly enough the one it works best on is an old p4 2.5 ghz with 256 megs of ram and an old video card (GeForce 4). My personal Computer has 2 gigs of ram, a Geforce 7800, is a pentium 4 3.2 Ghz - and it crashes all the time. Apparently The game alters some settings for slower/outdated machines - and it ends up running better on them. On my machine I've tried setting everything to low for graphics, but the trees still sway, the animals still move, and consequently the game still crashes. I really cant say what the deal is, honestly I don't think it is just one problem, this game appears to be riddled with bugs.
