I've just brought civ 4, and it installed fine on my computer, as did directx.

But when I go to start up civ 4, the cd drive starts to boot up, the computer starts to load it, and then a white box appears on screen for a second, and then goes. and thats it. the game desn't launch.

I've tried starting it from the program menu, the disc, and the desk top icon and all do the same.

Sounds like you have the old V1.

There is a patch V1.52 which resolved a very large number of issues, load that and come back with a copy of your Dxdiag if still problems.

Many people have laptops with Integrated Graphics Chipsets, Civ IV will only support Hardware T&L, ie a video card, not on board integrated chipsets.

ok, ive installed the new patch, and still doing the same.

What do you need to know from the dxdiag?

Its not a laptop, its an advent PC Media Suite computer which I take it has its own video card.

Dxdiag

Go to Start button - click - select run - type "dxdiag" (no quotes) - hit enter - wait a min - select "save all information" - post the file here using the 'advanced' button below

Dxdiag gets a very detailed picture of your Hardware and software environment, from that many issues can be picked up by different people with different areas of knowledge. Its kind of a 'hardware/software dictionary' of your PC as a crude explanation

hardware/software spec looks ok, video card is on the low(ish) side but should run ok albeit marginal.

It does sound like a memory/video issue. Try increasing the pagefile to 2000mb min=max. Its a long shot, as you not even started to play yet so the game in memory has not had time to build up.

Also try minimising the work the Video card has to do by turning off Textures, reducing resolution etc in the game Options menu. If the card is on the edge small changes can make a difference

If still issues, post again here, someone will pick you up. Keep an eye open for Neon Deon's posts, he is good at squeezing the last drop out of hardware
