Game won't install

I finally went out and bought BtS today, but unfortunately the game won't install.
Early on in the installation process I get the message: "Setup is searching for updated DirectX Runtime components and updating as necessary. This may take a few minutes..."
Then, after those "few minutes" it just crashes to the desktop without any error message.

I've manually installed the latest version of DirectX9.0c from the Microsoft website, but that doesn't seem to make any difference. The game's setup still crashes on the DirectX check.
I never had any trouble installing Civ4 or Warlords on this computer, or any other game for that matter. Running DXDIAG doesn't show up any problems either.
Thoughts?

System info:

Dell Dimension 8200 with
cpu: P4 2.4GHz
mem: 1Gb RDRAM
gfx card: Geforce4 Ti4600 (128Mb)
snd card: SBLive!
OS: WinXP Home SP1 (Dutch)
DirectX: 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Would there be any way to bypass the DirectX check? Like a command line option for setup? Or copying the setup files from the DVD and adding a line to setup.ini? Anything?

Thanks for the welcome, Ori :) (even though it took me nearly 6 years and an install problem before I made my first post here ).
When I tried to install the game the first time, my comp had the June release of DX9.0c installed. When that failed, I installed the August release and tried again, but to no avail.

I usually look at the join date when welcoming people - not this time so:
:band:Welcome to the posting side :devil:

Unfortunately I don't think there is much you can do in terms of getting rid of the DirectX check. What version of Civ4 do you have (just normal or gold edition?) do you have warlords?
The game does check for the patch versions of those at the same time, so it might be that it hangs there...

I've got the "normal" version of Civ4 as well as Warlords installed on my PC. Both were patched to the latest version before I tried to install BtS. The only message I get on the screen is the DirectX one, right after I click 'Install' (see screenshot), nothing about checking the patch versions.

Does anyone know of a way to let setup.exe generate a log file?
If I had some clue as to what goes wrong, I might be able to find a solution.
I don't want to give up on this game just yet.

has anyone figured this problem out? I unfortunately suffer from this aswell. I'm currently in the process of installing Civ4 again (going to manually patch it and then install warlords and doing the same)

does BTS require warlords I might just try installing BTS and leaving warlords out.

I have figured it out but you need to go to some sites to find the right patch.
Pvtbones, you do not need warlords for BTS, and for the installers, i suffer as well, i know how to fix it but i cant bacause my comp is way to slow to download it. my recommendation is go to gamespy or gamespot or whatever it is and download the patches. 123MB, 81MB, and 27MB are to big for my comp. you have to have the Civ 4 game itself. good luck

ive solved it
just uninstall your CivIV and Warlords.
then reinstall all of them and BTS
i shouda done it sooner.
your welcome
i no
im awesome

so i had the same problem when i bought bts. just install the new patch 3. something, and it will finish installing.
