Gamersgate/Updating Error

Alright, so I decided to take advantage of the special that Gamersgate is offering for Civilization 4 for $9.99 this weekend, because I'm in a different country and didn't pack Civ 4 with me. Plus being able to download it at any time seems nifty.

Not so much now.

I've download Civ4 and it seems to run fine, except when I try to update it. When I try to run it from inside the game, it downloads the patch, the patch goes to execute, and then says the game isn't on my system. I googled the problem and saw that I needed to download a different patch, apparently from Direct2Drive or something. I did that, but when I go to install that particular patch I get an error.

The error says "Unhandled Exception
Error Number: 0x80040702
Description: Failed to load DLL: DSETUP"

I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. I tried uninstalling, redownloading, and re-installing Civ4, but that doesn't seem to fix it, as I get the same error. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this can get Civ4 updated to the latest patch? I've thought maybe a similar patch has to be donwloaded from Gamersgate, but I don't see any such patch on their site.

I am not sure that the d2d patch works with gamersgate's version - you need to get the patch from the vendor you got the game from - the problem is that the digital versions all use slightly different DRM schemes and are not mutually compatible

Got in touch with the support team at Gamersgate. Apparently they need some doohickey to be given to them in order to create a patch specific to their service and they don't have it yet, or it's not available to be released yet.

Pretty lame.

they should offer you a refund - if they don't sell you a working product...

Well, it works, it just doesn't work as well as it could/should since they don't offer the patch.

well that and you will not be able to install the BtS and likely not the Warlords expansions.
