I have GeForce 5700LE 256mb and its very laggy even on my dads GeForce 5200 128 mb its laggy and can almost not run... please help!

I have the newest drivers and set the virtual memory to auto. Im desperate!

:EDIT:

I got a Pentium 4 2.66, 750 mb ram, 200 GB harddisk, GeForce 5700LE 256 mb

I have a fairly similar setup; what worked for me was to set AA to 0 and the other graphics options to low. I also used the nvidia utility to set the graphics preference to "performance" because it was on "high quality." The game works pretty well now.

My AA is 0 and graphics preference is on "performance"... but anyway - shouldn't my system be good enough to run this smoothly? I can run Battlefield 2 at 1024x768 smoothly.

I have a pentium 4 3.0 Ghz, 1536 mb RAM DDR2 and Sapphire Radeon X700 Pro, and it gets laggy when most of the map is discovered. My friend has a pentium 4 3.0ghz, 1gb ram DDR and ATI 128 mb (I don't know which model), and the game runs perfectly with no lags or bugs. I suspect there are memory leaks or something like that.

Well the 5700LE is subpar at best so I wouldn't expect it to run smoothly. Try turning the details down if you haven't already. Make sure Anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering are sert at application preference.

I have Rise of Nations with a FX5200 and it works perfectly (and IMHO is a more demanding game that Civ4)!!!

I meet the recomended requirements for Civ4 -- it should work perfectly like RoN does -- I think there alot of major bugs in the program!!!

Let's see if it works, but IMHO Civ 4 should work prefectly with what I have -- RoN does. Of course, this is only the first release and when Civ 3 came out, I had the same trouble (only with Civ 3, a driver update cured all of my graphic trouble)!

I agree that this game is a resource hog. What remains to be seen is how much performance will improve with patching. I'm getting vibes that the decision to go with Python will slow the game down regardless. That may be. But what I thought odd was that dropping the graphics settings way down the way I described has not gravely affected the look of the game during play, yet did permit better operation. So this game is sort of mysterious the way it acts up and gets cranky and in the ways it can be cured of some of its problems. Given that this is a "flagship" product, I expect lots of attention to fixes and improvements in the coming months and year or two...until Civ 5 anyway.

Rise of Nations isn't even 3D. It's requirements are much less than a 3D game.

Oh yes it is. It says right on the box that it requires a 16MB 3D card. And what about all of the units and buildings?! Every one of them in 3D. And since RoN is a RTS game, I just thought it would be more demanding than Civ4.

Nevertheless, something has to be done about Civ4!!! I can play through Industrial/Modern, but once I reach Industrial, you can forget it!!! I had to quit, because the game was barely responding!!!

No, Rise of Nations is 2D and uses sprites ... many sprites.
But I do find it weird that Civ 4 is more laggy than Empire Earth II on my laptop (with Nvidia Go 6600) even with low performance settings in Civ 4 and high in EE 2

I have no real performance problems here, turns are fast, scrolling ist fast, ok loading game time of 4minutes is a stupid thing but I can live with that, P4 2,8Ghz 1Gig DDr and ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128..but my major concern is the stability instead of performance, it crashes alot on huge maps in the later ages...on standard maps i didnt got any crashes so far..

I'm using the older 77.72 drivers and dont have the lag you guys are on about.

Athlon 2400+, 1gb, 6600gt 128mb (I'm playing in windowed mode too which I find helps). All details on max.

Do any of you laggy guys have on-board sound? That can cause a lot of problems in a lot of games...

I have ATI, i had the catalist 5.10 drivers..CTD, reboot, errors, lag etc etc, I deinstalled it, and installed the almost 1,5year old 4.10 drivers..ALL PROBLEMS GONE!!! :) so i'd say even the nvidia users...try to install the older drivers

The funny thing is that I play at 1280x1024 and the frame rate is low. But setting it at 1024x768 does absolutely nothing - the frame rate is the same slow annoying crap.

I've tried everything but old drivers. So I'm trying that tonight - hoping for a miracle.

be prepared for that miracle :) im not familiar anymore with the nvidia drivers but as far as i can see it, all the reviewers as well as firaxis themself as also people reporting everything is working great for them are probably using wether older drivers, or they tweaked something in their settings so that they don't use some particular "thing" of their driver which causes the error..since all people with OLD, not older but VERY OLD, drivers dont have any problems I suggest they newer drivers puts the graphics to a maximum or enabling some option on the chipsets which is the cause of all these troubles.

as for ATI, i tried everything, people reporting they used 5.04 drivers etc worked for them..it didnt for me..i had to go back all the way to the 4.10drivers which are made somewhat early 2004 and now everything works smoothly at 1280x1024 with all options maximized! and I can use Alt-tab non stop, MSN, ventrilo, Even coreldraw to make screenshots! :) btw
P4 2,8GHz, 1024Ram, Ati Radeon 9800 pro 128 are my sys specs

Listen you might wonder why I registered a year ago and only have this many posts. I consider myself more of a lurker and I never post anything I don't know.
Look at this Gamespy review. http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/rise-of-nations/5863p2.html
Here is a quote from the article."Visually, this is 2D gaming at its very best. On the surface it looks a lot like Age of Empires 2, but as you advance through the different Ages the detail in the units is astounding."

Well... I tried older drivers, but it didnt do anything about the framerate. I hope a patch will help - cant afford a new gpu :(
