Getting a grip on an aggressive AI opponent

I recently started off a regent game, small map, America (me) vs Spain. My point was to try to go for a diplomatic victory by getting a UN built and getting voted in (since I haven't played this type of game yet). I even allowed for a longer game when setting the game limits. I had absolutely no intention of going to war with Spain (which is completely contrary to my warmonger ways), I wanted to live peacefully and go for either a spaceship or diplomatic victory. I expanded like crazy and have about 2/3rds of the world territory. I've even given Spain ROP. However, Spain has declared war on me 3 times now. :gripe: I've lost several cities overall, but since I wasn't focusing on building alot of defensive units that's not a real surprise. I've been nothing but peaceful and trustworthy in my dealings with Spain, yet they give me the sword 3 times. Is this a lost cause? Should I start a new game and just give up, or is it possible to deal with an aggresive AI? I wish I had a save file to post, but I'm not at my home computer. I can post one if you guys think it will help.

Let me know today if you can, so I can either continue when I get home or start a new game. Thanks much.

PS. Oh yeah, the first time I was attacked I had just made the leap to Republic and was struggling with the gold per turn loss that initially comes (for me at least). I was disbanding my early game warriors and cutting back on research....not a good time to go to war. :wallbash:

Are you saying that you're playing with only one AI opponent? In that case I don't think it's a good idea to go for diplomatic. I'd say you need at least a couple of other AIs for that.

I don't really see a problem here. What, you think that you can lose because Spainiards will capture all your cities? Or that you will not be able to go for dip win? but why?? are there other civs left in the world who can vote for you? make them join the war against Spain...

If you have a week military, AI will attack. No matter what deals you have. You need quite an army for a peaceful game.
And don't play 1 on 1. Your diplomacy and trading skills won't improve much.

Yeah, I kind of realized that, so I allowed for a spaceship victory in case a diplomatic victory wasn't possible with 1 opponent. I'm still learning the game and didn't want my hands full with multiple opponents. I've won a spaceship victory before but didn't get it completed before end of game. I'd like to see what happens when you click that launch button :)

I think the next challenge for me with be playing with multiple opponents. I've managed victories up to monarch level, but usually with one opponent.

Well, it's a LOT more interesting with many opponents. I think I played only one game with 1 opponent (to see how fast I could win), but it was pretty borring.

OK, you've convinced me. I need to start a new game with

a) multiple opponents, at least 3
b) diplomatic victory condition
c) a strong army
d) a six pack of cold stout in the fridge

That should about do it. Anyways, thanks for the feedback.
