Ugly this, a man killed because he was the eldest son of the farm owner and the norm here is that the eldest son buys his parents out at a reduced price.
How the hell this bloke MacDonald believed the cops were too dumb not to ask , who could benefit.
It seems most people believe he did it but, it could not be proven beyond reasonable doubt.
It will be interesting to see if the widow will go after him for damages in the civil court where only the balance of probability rules apply.

Karma does apply, because he has a criminal record he will not be able to move out of NZ.

This story is very Biblical.

As for not getting a conviction, it's real hard to say. There doesn't seem to be a lot of physical evidence for the crime. Ewen's reaction to the murder, that he would be "sweaty" if he murdered someone sure seems damning, but it isn't actually illegal to be upset and act oddly when your brother-in-law is killed.

We need more people in jail!

In October 2010, the rate of imprisonment was 199 per 100,000 of population, giving New Zealand the second highest rate of imprisonment in the West.[citation needed] The United States is the only Western democracy with a higher rate of imprisonment – at over 730 per 100,000.[2]

What an interesting story!

Esau and Jacob
Cain and Abel
Prodigal son

None of these (IIRC) seems to quite fit.

It's a tragedy for the family.

There was no evidence he did it, there was a foot print at the scene that didn't fit his boot, and witnesses heard the shots at a time when he had a alibi.
