Getting Big Income

My first guess would be trade. Snagging monopoly techs and trading them around is a good way to finance your empire, assuming that you play at a level high enough that the AI actually has some gold to pay. Trading luxuries and resources is another way to bring in income. Again, the AI's ability to pay is partly dependent on difficulty level.

80-some cities, lots of improvements, and zero science. I don't have any active trades so it could be much higher.

That is a whole lotta gold there, Turner. Nice. :goodjob:

There are lots of things that you can do to increase the treasury. At the point where Turner took the screenshot, he was running minimum science. If you look at the screenshot, out to the right of "Constitutional Monarchy," you'll see "(9.0.1)." The 1 is really hard to see, but it's there. At the point where he took the screenshot, 90% of his revenue was going to the treasury, 0% to science, and 10% to luxury.

Here are some tips for increasing cash flow:
  • Make sure you have enough workers in the early game.
  • Roads.
  • Markets.
  • More workers.
  • Trade.
  • Keep unit support under control.
  • More roads.

It gets easier and easier to get more gold per turn on larger and larger maps for a variety of reasons.

Hmm, the screen shot has two non-standard game entries. The standard or "epic" game does not have either "Constitutional Monarchy" as a government option, nor a "Civil Liberties" advance. Clearly, that game is some form of a modification, so it is hard to say what other changes might have been made. I think with some of my modified games, if I built 80 cities (I do not think that I have every built more than 20 or so), and set the science slider to "0", I would come close to that income.

I went back and checked one of my games. The screenshot was taken before I launched the Space Ship, and shows the result of setting Science slider to "0". The city total is 46, many captured from the Aztecs with very small populations and poor location. Maximum population per city is 16 (edited city size) with no metropolis. I am not interested in dealing with population pollution. I have modified the game to reduce corruption quite a bit, and boosted the trade bonuses for coastal cities to compensate for the self-imposed city population cap.

I suspect that if I kept my corruption-reduction measures in place, and allowed for unlimited population growth, I could achieve the same results with a similar number of cities without the trade bonuses. I am playing on the Huge Ptolemy map, which is available for download in the maps download section. Note, the map for download does not have any of my modifications with it, but is a standard rules map.

I saw that too, he must be running a government modification.

Rise and Rule mod.....

In my most recent HOF game (which is also my most recent solo game) as Sumeria, Space Ship, Monarch, Huge (Pangea), in 1665 AD I was at 83045 gold, +1734 gpt, 0% science and 0% luxury. I had 200+ cities, and most of these were still science farms. I didn't need the science farms at this point, but I was too lazy to change all the geeks into taxmen. I had no active deals and three distant wars.

Not quite 3000 gpt, but this is from an unmodded C3C game.

That is still impressive from an unmodified game.

Some trade rapes I guess and a lot of cities, no useless buildings (big thing). Add some wonders and that most under appreciated / underrated Smith's Trade and I still think it's a damn awesome lot!

I think it's mostly trade. But it's always a good thing to get better at the money thing.

3000 gold unmodded!? Now I want to try. I didnt know that it was possible.

It is quite possible. Here's mine, at the end of my last game, no mods of any kind:

About 70 cities, many of them fully developed. So even without the commerce bonus from republic/democracy, it was possible to have a large income. I couldn't get any more from trade because there were only 2 other civs, and they had been at war with me not long ago, losing most of their territory and had no gold left to tarde.

Edit: Actually, the 16 gpt from another civ were from Egypt, paid for a peace treaty.
