Is there anyway of doing this?

Do you mean you want a game with only computer-run civilizations, and not having to run one of them yourself?

If so, the short answer is "yes," but there's a trick to it. I think you need to install a mod, and I can't remember offhand which one.

The AI autoplay component isn't up to date, you need to access it from RevDCM. Try any RevDCM based mod (my recommendation would be LoR), or just RevDCM itself. You will need to enable debuging mode (it's in the Civ4 config file, change the cheatcode = 0 line to cheatcode = chipotle), and then Press Ctl + shift + x to start AI autoplay.

Thanks for the reply guys.

How do I know which Civs will become vassals?

How do you release yourself as a vassal?

I have used this in LoR because I was stuck alone on an island and wanted to see how the AI would run. It pretty much just runs as an AI civ would run for how many turns you put.

I'd like to try this out too, but never managed to make ai autoplay mod work.
That's because, like I say above, it's not up to date. Again, you need to use RevDCM, if you don't like any RevDCM features (like Revolutions, or Barbarian civs), just turn them off in the Custom game selection. To access AI Autoplay in RevDCM you need to enable debugging mode, but if you want to watch the AI that's essential anyway. Again, I'll repeat myself and tell you how, open up your Civ4's config file (the CivilizationIVl.ini file in your BtS My Documents folder, shortcut is _Civ4Config in the BtS program files) in notepad and find the cheatcode = 0 line, then change the 0 to chipotle. Once you do this it enables debugging options, the most pertinent option for a casual user is the reveal shortcut, press ctrl + z to reveal the map. To enable AI Autoplay in RevDCM press ctrl + shift + x. A version of RevDCM in installer form can be found here, and again you can play a game of just straight BtS with RevDCM, if that floats your boat; to do so, just turn off the extra options in the custom game start menu.

RevDCM installer

Also all RevDCM based mods, Dune Wars, Legends of Revolution, etc, have this feature as they are built around a RevDCM core (as the above user mentions he can check it in LoR).

Actually if you hand over your civ to the AI that you already built up the AI will freak out and do really stupid stuff. This is because all the units it will have are all set to the default UNITAI types, which means all archers are UNITAI_CITY_DEFENSE, all macemen are UNITAI_COUNTER, etc. This means the AI can't make appropriate unit stacks, and can't organize it's military, so it basically goes nuts trying to fix this. If you want to see correct AI behavior you need to watch AI autoplay from the beginning, or use World Builder and manually change all the units you have to a ratio of UNITAI types that makes more sense so the AI can figure out how and what to do with it's units.

Phungus420 I used it from the beginning. I always check how the map looks in WB before I play. I don't look at the resources just how the world looks.

Easiest and quickest way (IMO) to see AI autoplay working is to install a fresh copy of Better AI.

Also, AI autoplay works out of the box when you use PIG Mod.

For both mods it's Ctrl+Shift+X to get the popup asking you how many turns to automate for.

In general, AI autoplay will be a part of any mod that uses Better AI, and by the sounds of it, any mod that uses RevDCM as well.

Oh, I didn't even realize it was in betterAI. And yeah, you're right, you don't need to enable debug mode, you can just do it. But If you're watching the AI I think it makes more sense to reveal the map in debug mode anyway. Of course usually when I'm doing this I'm playtesting, making sure stuff isn't broken; AIAutoplay can get through a game alot faster then I can.

What I tried several times is to use it from the betterAI mod. But I couldn't manage it. Right now I am using mergemod, which is supposed to be BUG+betterAI. BUG is working, the shortcuts to AI autoplay aren't doing anything, and I can't tell if the AI is playing better or not.

Thanks for the replies guys! :)

kaltorak,

It's possible that mergemod, whatever that is, did not quite get the merge of BUG and AI autoplay 100% correct. I remember for a long time AI autoplay was not working in PIG, presumably because I stuffed up the merge of some python files, but after using Fuyu's merge of BUG,BULL and Better AI I've had it working properly. :)

If you want just BUG,BULL and Better AI, use Fuyu's mod. He also included a couple of his own additions but they are all to the same or nearly the same standard as those in Better AI.

@phungus,

I haven't checked, but maybe you have to have chipotle enabled in the .ini? That at least lets you use Debug mode and maybe is require for AI autoplay to work. :shrugs:

I just got an advice in another thread to use PIG. I think that one is from you PieceOfMind?
I think I will try it, and see if the gameplay changes to units and such aren't too big.

(off topic)
Spoiler :

If you try it, please feel free to make a comment in the thread. If something jumps out at you as too game-changing for example, let me know. As much as I'm interested in discussing balance changes (a large part of the thread is taken up by balance discussions), it's just as important to me to hear about first impressions from new (to PIG) players. It's worth remembering that one of PIG's objectives is to not be intimidating in its breadth of changes.
