Has anyone tested this extensively? Stonehenge hammers to gold conversion seems very solid to me, but is it worth it to try to get GW and Pyramids Hammers conversion? Kind of like poor man's wealth version. I mean allocating some of your empire production to these when everything's settled.

It's a strong tactic if you are industrious or have easy access to the relevant multiplier resource. It is very strong if both conditions apply. Masonry is a cheap tech and only one-off the beaten path of techs you need early. This tactic has its place.

Obviously, in some situations the great wall or pyramids might be worth more than the failure gold, though you shouldn't stagnate your expansion to get them. That is all about balancing long-term and short term benefit which I think is beyond the scope of what you seem to be asking about. If anything, I think the gold gets more valuable on higher difficulties, as that maintenance can be brutal.

Indeed it is, I often find myself needing to get SH gold just to get pottery.

Edit: The point was, however, if it is still viable to do for non-IND and without speed-resources?

P.S. I can think like, also to speed it up whip scouts every 2 turns. Seems very good - that way you get 60+ gold a whip.
