Getting multiplayer to work

So yesterday I was trying to set up a game with a friend using hamachi. We both have the Sold Out software version of SMAX as well as the same patches (atleast I think we have the same patches). However with me hosting sometimes he cannot even find the game, others he can see it but just gets booted to the main menu when he tries to join.

Any ideas?

Take a look at Draz's From installation to tcp/ip games; SMAC(X), Hamachi and you. If that doesn't help, please post again.

Still can't seem to get it working properly, we can both ping each other in hamachi, but I cannot see him when he hosts, and when I host he tries to join but then gets booted to the main menu without any error message. I will try fiddling some more with some settings after dinner, but we are running out of ideas.

EDIT:
Okay still much the same, we can both see each others servers but when we try to join we just get booted back to the main menu after a few mins (we both had our firewall off).

try bypassing one/both router(s) if any and if it doesn't work, the firewall(s).
it's not safe, but you have a chance to make it work
