I'm no Histo expert but a thought to consider. Do you need to build (m)any metros?

You won't go above the 512 limit on just a standard map and avoiding pollution is good for your score. Maybe you'll need some metros once rails increase your food supply but I'd imagine that getting to this point will take quite a while and so maybe you'd be better off getting full use from the tiles you have rather than waiting to be able to build hospitals. Once you have sanitation, you could then flood the remaining tiles to get additional specialists and expand some of your cities into metros. All you would then need is a market to keep everyone happy, which has got to be better than temples, caths et al.

Just a thought...

I think you definitely need to get full use of tiles. My plan will be to build out OCP, then once I get all the end, start filling in until we get to rails and hospitals, then start moving population from the filler cities to the metros. I'll probably keep several cities busy building workers to help enlarge the metros as far as food can take them...

I managed a 2350 BC conquest giving 4447 points. It should have been about 10 turns earlier, but the last civ, Spain, defeated my veteran JW with a warrior and then rushed a spearman. I'll try again after/if I finish my huge emperor milk game.

5031 via conquest. I held off 2 turns or so to make sure the last battle involved 3 chasqui scouts attacking instead of just 1, as a loss in the battle would mean I'd be facing spears. Next time I'll just take the risk and either get a better score or abandon the game.

Very nice. What was the date, BTW?

It's a difficult decision to know whether to risk it or wait for nearby reinforcements. Every turn you wait is ~50 points lost. However as you have said already, if the attack fails the HoF attempt is lost.

2950 was the date. The only reason I waited was because it would still finish 1st in the table. From now on I'll risk it and go for the all or nothing strategy.

I played a histo attempt with the Americans, but screwed up and got a domination win in 1700 AD or thereabouts for about 3.0XX points. Datescorecalc gave me fairly consistent 2050 estimates of about 3.7XX points though with an internal per turn score of about 5.1XX.

Overall, I don't even have something acceptable to submit, but it wasn't that good anyway.

well, I'm at 10 BC with a score of 200. I'll continue with this, cause it's a histographic game and I need one for QM, but I assume this game sucks.

Will go the conquest route, as well - see what happens.

Have you compared it with boogaboo's game?

edit: ~350 at that stage. Still, at least it will chart for your QM status.

This is the first time I have done this - I think I should have gone heavy research till republic to dump the depotism. I went about 50% lux, which meant I got to republic later than I should have.

now I'm at 450 AD or so - my score is around 400 I think, with about 30% of land - 1/2 way to the domination limit. I think I'm going to have go take the last 3 luxuries, because I can only trade for 1 of them.

I'm about 1/2 way through the middle ages -went to metallurgy and now the top level, to allow ToA as much influence on enlarging my sea borders as possible, as well as starting off cathedrals.

Am playing as the Dutch - seafaring and agri give half price aqueducts, hospitals *and* harbors, as well as fast galleys. I think it's effective.

ok - using SirPlebs thing, I get about 1600 points if I do nothing else.

As I have a lot of land and a lot of hospitals to build, I am guessing I will get a score of between 2000-2500. Boy this is boring...

in looking at my first post and comparing where I am, I found a couple of things I could be doing much better:

1) I didn't expand to the dom limit fast enough - I could get to it by 10 BC on a large map on warlord - why did it take until 1200 AD on a standard map on chieftain? Granted, that was a large pangea with mainly water and this is a standard arch with mainly land, but still...
2) I worried too much about happiness early, and not enough on research.
3) I have been building banks like mad - money is key for rushing improvements in corrupt cities.
4) I only kind of used OCP (which is probably a lot of why I didn't get to the dom limit too fast.)

1470 AD. At the dom limit, am slowing dismantling temples that threaten to expand me beyond the limit. Am done with research, just going to build cure for cancer. Cashrushing like mad now and clearing out jungle/marsh and improving the last tiles I don't have. Score is now projected at a bit over 3000.

I'll post some screenies at some point, not that anyone really cares about a mediocre chieftain histo game ;) I did have a tank lose to a hoplite! but I didn't take a screenshot.

I guess I'll post that I have a 854 point entry in this gauntlet. I'll be tailgunner, again. Maybe I should get an award for always coming in last place? Like a wooden shoe?

Maybe, I'm wrong for suggesting this, but if all your land is improved, set the workers to auto pollution cleanup. They won't do anything else, so they will always be available as soon as pollution rears its ugly head.

oh - I should do that. I did it before, but I had a bunch of mountains that werne't improved, so they went off and did that. was annoying.

good call!!

Trouble with auto-pollution-clean is that when there's no pollution left the orders are cancelled and you still have to Shift-P (or whatever the shortcut is) next turn. If you're not using city govenors you need to manually reset the poputation to work cleaned tiles also.

OK - I got it done. 3654 points - I guess that's 3rd ;)

Something I didn't know about happened - at 2030, I got a message saying "20 turns left!" and a little box popped up, that showed how many turns left until mandatory retirement.

Am going to spend an hour or so trying a conquest - see if I can catch a #1 ;)

but I gotta get my monarch diplo victory to make the QM!!!

btw - this added a histo for an unpopular civ - The Dutch!! Made for some interesting city names - The Hague is kind of unwieldy on it's own... but New The Hague 3????
