As a marginal player on Regent level I thought Iwould give the GOTM a try , hoping to improve my play. Unfortunatly, all I have accomplihed is to subject my self to several hours of abuse at the hands of the AI.

My job and commute consume some 60 hours a month, and I also have a family life. I look forward to time playing Civ as relaxing. the last thing I need is hours of frustration trying to complete a game that is way past my capabilities. I will probably continue to down load and play he QSC so I can learn from completed timelines how to get a good start.

I guess I need to go back to playing single games at a level and pace that I can handle.

I spent a lot more time than you in my first Gotm which was also a loss but went back to see what I did wrong and replayed the game about a dozen times until I won. I submitted the loss before I finally won but all I was trying to do with the replays was to see if it was possible for me to win with my style of play. Since then I have played 2 old Gotms for practice and 2 current Gotms that I was able to get wins. All these winning Gotms were at a lower difficulty level than the first loss but with every new attempt of any Gotm I have improved my play.

The thing I like best about the Gotms is the starting position is always better then I ever get with a random generated map and there are enhancements in the Gotms that you wont see until the new expansion comes out. Even the losses count for score so just submit your loss and try some older Gotms at lower difficulty levels than the present game.

Jailem:

wjat level do you usually play? Did you go the 'conquests' route if the GOTM was 'above' your normal level?

I never, ever, played Deity before the GOTM dragged me there. But I probably learned more from that loss than 100 wins on my 'comfort' level. It's always painful to lose. I console myself with kjicking the AI's butt at lower levels when I get P.O.ed

There are many helpful people here who will assist your game. This is my first post but I have read most of the War Academy articles and have found that the GOTM has challenged my abilities. While frustrated at times, learning has been fun . I think the greatest thing about GOTM is that it has made me play civs I normally would not try and at levels I would have thought impossible to survive. I have lost my share of GOTMs but I have not been wiped out, YET! Thanks to all the players that help us newbies.
