Godwin's Law

Is comparison to Hitler a valid way to make an argument?

No. Because ridiculous comparisons is something the Nazi's would do.

Given recent historical events in Western Civilization Hitler and the Nazis are the current Bad Guy tm.

Its that simple.

It has nothing to do with democratic elections, cultural emergence or econmic realities of the time period. Most of us were educated through school, or movies, that Nazi's were Bad.

In early times I would suggest that other cultural reference points were used.

Hitler/Nazi references should be allowed only if there is no interpretation or extrapolation made pertaining to the details of the situation. As a reference point to being 'evil', I think they serve pretty well, however inaccurate it is.

There is also another phrase that should be included in Godwins law, maybe as #2 .. ever seen someone prefer fellow discussioners as "useful idiots, like Lenin would have said"? To me it's same as saying "you're and idiot and i disagree with you, but can't come up with any real arguments". And for some reason it usually escapes moderators ("don't insult other discussioners") watch.

On the one hand, if we can't see parallels to what happened then in modern situations, we will end up repeating them.

On the other hand, if we compare everything and every one we don't like to them, then it loses its meaning and calling something that genuinely compares won't do anything.
