Good Ole Games is offering Moo1 and Moo2 in one package for 5.99. No CD required.
It says works in XP and Vista. I am sure it is using Dosbox for Moo1 and probably Moo2 as well.

Yeah I am on Win7 as well and using DosBox for both. I may get it so I can skip the CD though.

Stll consider my all time favorite game. Probably as it was the first true PC game I played.

I have done than more than once. A few like Might and Magic I have bought up to 4 times with the different packages Reg/Limited/Millen/Plat.

Someone reported that Moo2 has 1.40 applied. I find that a problem. It should offer the patch, but some want to remember the game as they played it back at the time. Not improved or fix.

yes its patched to the unofficial 1.4, that patch is supposed to fix a few bugs and even adds a few things like being able to tell the game not to make black holes or worm holes when its building the map, or set a minimun number of planets in the home systems..

I think there's no harm done by not allowing you to choose, its not a mod, but you can probably revert to earlier versions by installing earlier patches.

That patch was mainly about MP play, hence no wormholes are wanted. Those things are to level the maps for all human players. No black holes means player A is not handicapped with them while B does not have them.

Same for wormholes and planets in home system. If A gets 4 planets and B gets 1, A has an advantage. If you can make it so all home systems have the same number, you make it closer to even.

I don't know all the fixes, but I doubt they make a big change to the games. The thing is casual players that just want to relive the old days may want all the warts as part of the charm.

Version 1.40 Changes

Bug Fixes
*********

Ship leader crash - You will no longer crash the game when you
visit the ship leaders screen and you have
no ships.

Credit cheat - You will no longer receive Trade goods and
produce an item at the same planet in a single
turn.

Last race bugs - The last race button has been removed from multiplayer
game screens due to numerous bugs (duplicate race
pictures / various crash bugs)

Arti planet bug - The arti planet special will no longer be removed
when an opponent ends their turn first.

Stealth tech bug - Stealth tech now works on ships equiped with it.

XP LAN game support - Lockups and Crashes related to Windows XP LAN
games are mostly fixed. Now supports XP SP2.

Missing VESA bug - You should no longer receive the erronious "Please
load VESA.COM" when you have a proper video card.

Repeat Build bug - Repeat built production can no longer be canceled after purchased.

Cloned cships and opships - cship's and opship's should now always be used up when
the ship lands. It should no longer be possible to build
the colony and keep the ship.

Cloak - Cloaked ships will no longer be visible to long range scans on the Galaxy Map.

Phasing Cloak - Phasing Cloaked ships will no longer be visible to long range scans on the
Galaxy Map and they should now always revert to regular cloaking after 10
rounds during combat.

Black Hole Generator - Black Hole generator should now destroy ship when ship initiative
is enabled.

Tractor Beams - Tractor Beams should no longer crash the game.

New Features
************

New technology age - Post warp. All players get all techs 250RPs and below except for
fighter bays (even creative races will not receive fighter bays).

New galaxy size (single player only) - Cluster galaxy. Map has more stars in the same
area as a large galaxy.

Improved home systems - There will be at least one colonizable planet
plus your homeworld in your home system.

New command line switches - various command line switches have
been added to improve the map generator.

/nowh No wormholes are generated on new maps.

/nobh No black holes are generated on new maps.

/noorion Orion and guardian are not generated on new maps.

/minstart The unoccupied planet closest to the sun in all
home systems will be at least 2 production per
worker to a normal G race.

/hugestart The unoccupied planet closest to the sun in all
home systems will be huge and its gravity will
match that of the homeworld.

/richstart The unoccupied planet closest to the sun in all
home systems will be rich and its gravity will
match that of the homeworld (this switch is
ignored if /goodstart is used).

/goodstart The unoccupied planet closest to the sun in all
home systems will be Ultra Rich and its gravity
will match that of the homeworld.

/nosplint No splinter worlds unless there is a monster
guarding it.

/planets=# Sets the minimum number of planets in all home
systems to #. This value includes the home
world. Valid values are 2-5 (default is 2).
If you try a value outside of the valid range
it will use the default.

/picks=# Sets the starting race picks points to #.
Valid values are 10-14 (default is 10). If you
try a value outside of the valid range it will
use the default. Note: some screens in the game
only show the first 11 race picks (it is
possible to pick more than 11).
/droids All players start out with the ability to build
androids (all 3 types).

/noreport The report button on the diplomacy screen will be
disabled preventing you from seeing what technology
your opponent has. Also, Technology demands and trades
are greyed out.

/noscan Disable the scan button in combat so that detailed
scans of ships will no longer be possible. Only quick
scans will be possible by mousing over the ships.

/nohousing The housing option will no longer be available from
the build list so housing production will not be possible.
Also, this switch adds +150% bonus to population growth.
The bonus will be added into the growth formula exactly
the same way that the bonus from universal antidote is.

/nonebula When use the map is generated without any nebulas.

NOTE: the switches /minstart, /hugestart, /richstart, and
/goodstart all effect the same planet. The effect is
cumulative. These switches ONLY EFFECT ONE PLANET.
ALL OTHERS ARE COMPLETELY RANDOM.

Other Changes

The modem comm info button has been disabled in order to make room
for the patch code. If you need to configure the modem settings,
you can use the 1.31 version of the game to do so. Also, the TEN
button has been disabled for the same reason.

That's probably true for some people. It only takes me 5-10 minutes to beat a small map on impossible against the AI. Not much challenge in that.

I would like to see that log. 8 races about 20 stars, pre warp, 5 minutes? Hell go with advance tech. That would be the fastest clicking.....

More than 4 races on a small map would take longer, especially since doing a speed-run just about requires using a Telepathic race and Mind Controlling everyone else. With 8, you're more like to run up against another telepathic race and have to do ground battles.

At Pre 10 mins is about 50 or so turns, 60 if you are hardly even looking at things. Not even going to be able to reach most systems.

I don't think that casual players are going to know anything about speed runs. 8 races has been done in 20 turns on small maps, but that requires some seriuous luck on maps and a lot more than 10 minutes.

In any event my original comments were aimed at very very casual players. The ones that may be interested in gettting Moo2 form GoG after not having it for years.

I doubt any MP players or experts need a copy of Moo2. I have several, but could buy it for collection purposes.

Thanks for that hint! :) Looking at the offer, it seems to be a fair price and fair conditions. Version 1.4 is a bonus on top; I wonder if that fan patch is still in development? I remember that its homepage listed some issues scheduled to be fixed in future versions (plus improvements to Antaran attacks) when I visited it the last time. Moo2 is an old game now, but there still seems to be interst and an active community.
