I've played the game a lot, so I tend to think I've seen everything. This was a new one, though. I was playing as the Russians and attacking the Iroquois with a Cossack. The first time a unit won, it triggered a Golden Age. The only way I've ever seen a Golden age begin is when you build a wonder that goes with your civ - like the pyramids for the Egyptians. Now the question is, why did attacking trigger this? Was it because it was my Civ's special unit? Anyone else see this happen?

yes, i see it all the time. in fact i use this to my advantage.

the "special unit" for each civ will trigger a golden age when it is the first one of it's kind to win a battle.

that's why i keep those units near my border towns, in case i'm attacked. i can pull on out of the border town to complete a battle and start a golden age. that way i will have extra money during the war and don't have to reduce my lux level.

good luck

It is as you guess, your UU. It's like that for all Civs. I'm surprised you haven't seen it before.

That's why some people complain about ancient UU's, they tend to start the GA too early for it to really matter.

When a wonder starts the GA it because, it falls in the category of your civs traits. Like Great Library for scientific civs.

Enjoy your golden age ;)

I see. I've never noticed it before because I never use my special unit. The Russians and the Chinese are about the only civilizations that have one I'd actually use, and this is my first time as the Russians. I'll have to try this more often.

The Legionionares of Rome are a pretty good UU, although like all ancient UU your GA will likely occur before you've built up a great economy/infrastructure to take advantage of it. Personally I like the Chinese Rider, as it comes late enough to give you time to get ready for the GA, plus, the Rider is a pretty good unit as units go. Love that 3 movement and the retreat ability!!

I had a similar thing but with the American F-15. I'd managed to stay peaceful right up until modern times, and had put loads of F-15s on Air Superiority missions. Then the Russians started attacking with their WW2 style Bombers - and I managed to shoot down about 75% of their attacks with my F-15s - AND got a goldenage in the process. I used to think the F-15s were a waste of a good unit - but their success as defensive units was something I'd maybe overlooked. Check em out next time you're playing as Americans.

i thought that the muskateer for the french showed up right on time.
