They really need to tweek the implementation of these things to be a lot more reflective of your actual Civ. I'v started off as the Americans 2 times with Civ abilities turned off and got my 'Golden Age' after I built the Pyramids. This was so early in the game that no Civ, mine included, had done really much of anything. I really couldn't tell what difference it was making, if any.
Now, 2000 years later, I'm ahead in Tech, Land Mass, and all of my Cities are the most developed. I'm starting to capture enemy cities with Culture and I control all of the Luxuries on the planet. I'm making money hand over fist and all of my advances are coming under ten rounds. Right now, I deserve a Golden Age. If there are multiple Golden ages, I'll probably be able to let you know as I seem to be the stud of Wonders in my game right now.
Nope. It only lasted twenty rounds. My handful of cities were so small that even if I could tell a difference (which I couldn't), it would have been insignificant. What really helped this game was the first game that I got clobbered in! I learned well. But the 'Golden Age' was useless. If it was triggered by me leading in large number of categories or in total culture, at a certain period of time, for instance the turn of the millenium, then it would have been more useful to whomever got it because there would be more larger well-developed cites and probable contact between all of the civs for comparison.
