Gorgo - Advice?

I ended up on a sizeable land mass alone
uhh...it's pretty hard to lose in that situation with any civ
Warriors have a strength of 20. Spearman 25. Hoplites can go to 35 with their unique ability.

Why do people have a strong dislike for them? It seems substantially better than a warrior.
you're forgetting warriors have +10 vs anti-cav. hoplites get crushed by them in a straight battle especially with +4 deity bonus. Formation only makes them equal (35 vs 34)

Formation + ideal terrain + Thrust should make that go a little bit more in your favor. They are substantially better than a Warrior - just not against other Warriors.

Not saying that starting alone in that situation isn't very favorable - for obvious reasons being able to create a hex layout of 9 cities is op. Personally I prefer having a really close neighbor to start to knock someone out early.

Just saying mostly: an extra policy slot is amazing for almost anything you wanna do.

So the hoplite is meh. But when Ghandi started spamming varu I was glad to have them. They are, at least, a response to the real UUs.

gorgo has been my favorite game so far. like other people say just keep spamming hoplites and murder everyone for culture

I think Hoplites need to lose their Melee unit weakness. Precedent is already there with the War Cart. Them being weak to Warriors with clubs is one of the more absurd game imbalances at the moment.

Played today as Gorgo and made few Hoplites in hopes of drilling through cities with the 2xsupport bonus thins... well, Xbows did most of the job.
The culture bonus on kill was providing suprisingly large amounts of culture, because of few DoW's, because of somebody forward settlet next to AI capitol :D
And that purple science is just skyrocketing and I don't even know why, lol :D I mean I got Akropolis, which gives 10culturr with no buildings in it????
But, yeah, it was fun chewing through policies instead of the usual science.

People shouldn't feel compelled to use every aspect of a civ's kit just because it's "there." Hoplites are okay but you don't need to include them to play Gorgo. Honestly, she does fine playing peacefully with her Wildcard slot and unique district. Depending on the number of barbarians and city state quests it's still usually better than Pericles (and most civs).
