Got a really noobish question about the world seed...

How do I find out what the seed is from a saved game?

I should go to bed, i'm tired.... :p
Not sure, but if you look in the .ini file, it might be there. In conquests, at least. I think.

Um.... *woosh*

That was the sound of what you just said going over my head. :p

I asked the same question a while back. The conquests.ini file gives the seed from the last game you started with the Play New Game option, the same as if you choose Play Last World. If your saved game is from your last game it will have this seed of course. If your saved game is older than this it still might be possible to extract the seed from the save, but you would have to ask the technical experts.

There are utility programs that can take your save and convert it to a scenario, which you can then play from the start (4000 BC). I used the Civ3MultiTool for this.

Or alternatively, I can extract it for you (email it to gotm@civfanatics.net). I might wrap this into a utility... :hmm:

Couldn't the saved game be loaded (perhaps play a turn for an autosave) then quit out and Play Last World? Then on the top of the settings screen just write down the seed?

I don't think it will work that way; but you might continue on and let it create the world. Then save. You still won't know the seed; but should have a duplicate of it in the new game. :) I must try this!

Also, I have noticed that if you look in the Conquests.ini file for a random game, you don't have a WorldSeed.

@ainwood: May I suggest that you get with Gramphos (I think it is he) and have him put it into the next version of CivMulti Tool.

I've put it in my own utility ;)

Cool! I look forward to downloading that tool.

Is the utility available? I could not find it in the download section. Will we be able to extract other settings (warm, archipelago, etc.) as well as the seed?

Also looking forward to your tradeassist for Conquests.

I have been waiting for that ever since I got Conquests. I loved the Vanilla version. I have a bad habit of forgetting to check the diplo screen, which is hurting me at the higher levels. :crazyeye:

You know, if you read the appropriate thread in C&C, it's been promised for months now.... ;)

I have a nother truely NewB questions.
What does the world seed do, I understand that it somehow effects how the map is created/terrain+resource placement (maybe im wrong) but how does it work.

Random number generators are used to make the map, however, they are not truly random: they are mathametical functions. These random number generators need a 'seed' => a value they use to calculate all the subsequent random numbers.

The world seed is simply the first number that is fed to a random number generator that is used to generate the map. :)

so if i use same world seed number, would map be the same or still ahve variations.

If you use the same seed to generate a map, it will be exactly the same (except for which civs you put on it of course)

I think it has been determined that you would get the same shape of map. However, there are other variables being introduced (temp, world age, etc.). These modify how the terrain looks and how productive the tiles are. I haven't actually tried this experimentally; but i have read post that indicate that this is so.
