Playing as Barbarossa and just out of the blue Barbarossa appears on my screen and declares war... and no, there's no 2 Barbarossa in my game.

A similar thing happened to me. I was playing as Phillip II and was DoWed by myself...declaring that Kongo will never fall to the likes of me. Later on I actually encounter Kongo for the first time to find they are already at war with me. Somehow Kongo DoWed me without ever meeting me, but because I had never encountered Kongo, Phillip decided to do the talking for them.

Happened to me in two games so far as well. Playing as Russia, Peter showed up declaring war on me for Germany who I hadn't even met yet and in my latest game as China, Qin showed up also declaring war on me for Germany while I hadn't met him. First thought it was a bug with Germany until I saw this thread.
First of all it must be bug that the AI declares war on me while we haven't even met yet. And if that is even possible through an alliance or so it shouldn't show the wrong leader (namely yourself).

Happened to me too: When I met Germany the first time they declared war on me straight away. As if that wasn't strange enough along with them the Romans declared war on me too. Since I was playing with Trajan, Trajan declared war on Trajan.
Later on I met England, exchanged some formal pleasentries and in the next round they offered me peace. So apparantly I had been at war without knowing it with a civ I hadn't met yet.

Exact same thing happened to me. Philip II and had not met Kongo and I showed up to say Kongo had had enough of me. Wasn't sure if I was actually at war or not.

I had this as well. I also have a pretty good idea why it happened. In my case, Arabia declared war on me, then I declared on myself. As it turned out, America was in an alliance with Arabia at the time, so they when Arabia declared, so did America. However, since I hadn't met them yet, the game showed me declaring on myself. Once I finally met America, long after Arabia and I had made peace, we immediately made peace and resumed normal relations.

Had the same, played as scythia, it was ancient eara with no warmonger penalty and there was a roman settler running around that i wanted to take....suddenly, on the next turn, tomyris declares war on me (lol) as well as russia. For the rest of the game i was always denounced by the civs I have already met before that point and had to deal with several DoWs.

Just had the same thing. I'm playing as Montezuma, got a screen showing Montezuma declaring war on me. After that was done I got a screen showing Saladin declare war on me. When I exited out, I had a notification saying that Phillip II had declared war on me, but I've never met him.

When I click through to the next turn, I still don't know Phillip II.

I'm not sure whether Civs who haven't met me yet should be able to declare Joint War, or join a war due to some sort of alliance, if they haven't met me? If they can, I'd at least expect the game to acknowledge that I'm aware of their existence after that point. It would make more sense to me if they couldn't declare war on me at all, though!

Save attached, from just after it happened.
