I (stupidly!) purchased Tropico at my local Compucentre (in Toronto, at Yorkdale mall) last Friday. I took it home that night, installed it, and started to play........this game stinks. The graphics are circa-1980's, the sound is ****ty and the overall gameplay put me to sleep. I removed the CD and started a new game of Civ III within half an hour of installing Tropico. Saturday came along, and I returned to try and get my money back, or at least trade it in for another game. Guess what? Their exchange policy is "14 day refund/30 day return on un-opened product". Well, HOW THE HELL ARE YOU S'POSED TO KNOW WETHER OR NOT YOU NEED TO RETURN IT WITHOUT OPENING THE M-F****** BOX?!?! So, long story short, I slinked out with my tail between my legs, and am sending my father (who resembles a pudgy Saddam Hussein and is one hell of an arguer! :goodjob: ) over there tomorrow, game in tow, to get me my $70 (cdn.) back.............whaddya ya think? :p

I think you're better off in the "Off Topic" forum.

I think you should have checked the stores return policy BEFORE you bought it.

They won't let you return opened software because you might have simply burned the CD.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, check return policy before buying products!

I believe he would be better of in the "All Other Games" forum, which is exactly the place where this thread will be moved to, as soon as a mod lays eyes on it.

I'm not sure about Canada but the US has a federal law which states that you can only return opened software for the exact same product, though there are ways around it ;)

yes we have a similiar law.It must be an inherent defect though. Not that you don't like the game or it is made by clowns. That is buyer beware stuff.

off-topic? perhaps. However, I was under the impression that most game outlets had pretty decent return policies (I recall someone mentioning EB's no-questions-asked return policy -shrug-) Anyhow, my original question still remains, how are you supposed to know whether or not you need to return a game without even opening the package? This whole situation really grates at my nerves, as I have just blown $70 on a piece of junk game that isn't worth 10 cents. I s'pose I'll just end up trading it in at some used-game store for a dog-eared copy of SMAC or something..........dang. :(

Well, the bastards running compucentre aside, its your own fault friend. All you can do is take this as learning experience.

Use the CD as a coaster, frisbee, BB gun target, etc...

I liked Tropico too. It was a nice little building game..pretty funny too. I look forward to the expansion. That isn't out now..is it?

You have a used game shop in town? There's one where I live (it started out selling used CDs), and they'll likely buy the game from ya (unless you shattered the CD and burned the manual). At least you'll recover some of the cost.

Btw, I don't think Tropico is so bad. The music rocks, and I like the challenge of making those lazy SOBs do something productive.

So how did Saddam do? Was he able to talk your money back to you?

On whether you should get your money back: Unfortunately you purchased a game you did not like. Was it missing something from it that the box said it had? If not maybe the fault is not with the game maker but with you for buying a game without reading the package. I am not attacking you in this post, just trying to change your perspective. Maybe you should just take this as a learning experience to read the package carefully and to read a review for it online or thru a gaming magazine you trust. Also a demo is a good way to try the game before you buy and I am almost 100%, strike that, I am 100% that Tropico has a demo out and has for a few months now. I got it on a CD that game with one of my gaming magazine. I use to get many gaming magazine with demo CDs but since I have cable modem I have stopped doing that and now just get them without the CD for less money. One gaming mag with CD subscription will cost you about 30$ USD per year, cheaper than a game and will give you plenty of demos to play.

For background: I am one of those guys that complains about the problems with Civ3 but still think it is a great game.
