Gotm #1 Results

I'm sorry for the upcoming delay: I won't be able to update the last games until saterday. However, I can tell you that LRY took the 2nd place, despite the fact that he ended in 1905 AD and got scored as if in 2020 AD! TimTheEnchanter is somewhere in the middle and PaleHorse76 just above CornMaster. Tomorrow I'll be gone...

Thanks a lot, Matrix.

I have no time to play to 2020.
It cost time to manage so many cities and engineers. If I have time, maybe I will finish it and see how high I can get.

When will you play deity level and large map ? Can't get high score with small map.

Am I missing something? When are the winners going to share their strategies so the rest of us can improve.

P.S. My first post. The GOTM is a great idea!

Welcome radman!

Well, there hasn't been that much of a discussion so far. But you might take look at the GOTM #2: Your first decision topic...

Let me start the discussion.

I got lucky in GOTM1 by finding and destroying the Zulu's early - allowing me to expand over the entire island.

I usually follow a rapid expansion strategy, but am never sure when to stop expanding and start growing. In GOTM I stopped when my island was full.

I'm also never sure when to switch from Monarchy to Republic. I just took a chance.

I usually play bloodlust, so my end game was weak. I launched my spaceship first only to have the English launch a faster ship two years later. In a close game, it seems that it might be bad to launch first?

Comments?

[sigh] I wish I was smart enough to explore more than I did.

To the north of the Zulu's there was an unused island I obtained.

Simple: switch when you've built temples in most of your cities and the the happiness of the city isn't dependent of the armies in the city.

The propulsion determines the flight time of the ship. You just have to weigh this out: can you make that much propulsion in a certain time that the decrease of the flight time is bigger than the time you need to build the propulsion? Yes: build. No: launch. But I don't know how the flight time is exactly related to the number of...tail pipes.

Radman...I too was hoping for more discussion of sucessful strategies. GOTM 2 seems to be generating a bit more conversation, at least initially.

I created a GOTM #1 Stories thread that seems to have died quickly - probably because game #2 had already started. My strategy is posted there. I'm definitely still learning the game, so this is not necessarily a great recipe for success, but it worked in this case.

I also kept a timeline if you want to see more detail. The timeline doesn't have a ton of pictures, so hopefully it makes sense to someone other than me.

Very nice timeline!! Can I add it to the timelines section?

3. Great Library is mixed blessing because it slows down techs you want to research

I don't know what you mean by this... Great Library doesn't slow down your research.

Not the Great Library itself. But the more advances you have, the longer it takes to research a new one.

Matrix is right, the liabary is not that great in multiplayer games, Infact, on the ladder the Great Wall is a wonderfull wonder to get 2nd or 3rd on your priortiey list for first wonders.

That timeline is pretty fancy.I feel shame

Isn't the ladder all duels? If you are building the Library in duels...well.

I really like that detailed timeline

I also liked those other two lists showing what you learned and what came through luck. Good work.

The timeline wasn't that difficult to do. I just typed it up in Excel as I was playing, then wrote a few Excel functions to build it into the HTML table, which I just pasted into the page.

It did slow me down having to type everything that was going on, but it was useful even during the game to refer back to things like when other civs started their wonder projects, or when they made their last tech discovery.

The Great Library comment was based on something I read recently which was very vividly confirmed during the game: The more techs you acquire, the more beakers you need to discover a new tech. Furthermore, the jump when discovering the 20th tech is huge.

I knew the English had Engineering because they were starting KRC and I was afraid they had or would get Invention and switch to Leo's Workshop before I could build it. I set my citizens working on high trade sites expecting to get Invention in about 5-6 turns (I had about 1/3 of my beakers and my tech rate was every 9 turns). Shortly after that, I got bridge building (my 20th tech) from the GL. When I looked at my science advisor it was saying I now needed 13 turns per advance. I got Mathematics from the GL a few turns later and it took a total of 11 turns from the time I thought it would only take 5 or 6 to get Invention.

Overall the Great Library allows you to focus on one area and it will "fill in" many tech areas you don't discover yourself. But if you want to focus your research on getting to very specific goals quickly, it will slow you down in reaching those goals.

The Great Library is useless in multiplayer game, but very important in single game. I think it's the one of the must have wonder.

Right, when you get a science from GL,maybe delay the science you are researching. But you can get many science by free, you can
only develop the science you need. And, you can stop science when you built Wonder, and get science by GL.

I practically never build GL!!! Only in Deity games or to get the points for it!!! I don't want all the useless science that the AI is developing to slow down my own science advance!!! If you know you advances then you can easily get the right stuff and then the right government and then some 30-50 turns after that the GL is useless since you have all the advances that the AI is trying to get!!!
