Did the romans get all nasty with the locals?

Challenger saved game
Not having the Gems' Happiness hurt a lot more than not having its Commerce.

I intended to take the same Resource from Alex but got stonewalled when my Chariots encountered a Phalanx.

No matter, as I Pillaged his Copper, avoided his Phalanx, and then played cat and mouse with his Archers, earning Promotions on my units. But, while I was busy with doing so, I got beaten to Wonders that I had been targeting.

As of 1 AD, though, I haven't built a single Praetorian, since I chose a different tech path than is typical for Rome and pretty much ignored Iron Working.

I stubbornly tried to conquer Korinth on the eastern hill's line - bad idea.
After loosing all my praetorians against two phalanx and an archer, I decided to retire in 175 BC.

I had to go back into my saved games to see where this game was at 1AD...

The answer seems to be not much of anywhere. I settled 1E of the hill, which turned out to be kind of an awkward spot. I eventually got the sugar tiles worked by my Iron city to the east and a commerce city to the north. I basically expanded on an east-west line. It had the benefit of blocking off the northern tip of the continent.

My expansion was slow compared to Alex, though, and he was encroaching on my borders. I had just started building Praetorians, so it'll be several turns before the campaign begins. I had also noticed that the Greek city sites were kind of terrible from my perspective, so I was trying to get Settlers ready to go after I burned down half the continent.

Forgot to mention: Explored with the settler first: 1N2E. Saw the southern sugar. Settled the second turn, 1N1E of the start - and later was happy to find I've got a second sugar. Farmed one to improve it as sugar later, build a hut on the other one.

Alexander was quite fast in settling all over the place, even the Dye/Gems-city NW of Rome.

I found it awkward, there was no useful place for settling (food nowhere) down the south-west river.

This seems like a hard Emperor level game. With no trading partners, the other AIs may be well advanced before we meet them. I hope any new players are either highly skilled or take the Adventurer save.

Settled 1E and beelined iron working. Then decided a Praet rush of Alex would be too costly, better to put my effort into my economy and let Alex build me some more cities = wait for catapults (then conquer whole mini continent).

So, focused on getting CS from Oracle and succeeded:
675BC: CoL, Oracle, CS Rome (3), Antium (3); 6 warriors, 3 praets, 2 workers

Tech: Agr, BW, IW, Wh, Pot, Writing, Myst, Med, PH, CoL, (CS), AH, Math, Constr, Hunting, Arch (1AD), [next monarchy]

1AD Cities: Rome (6) 1E; Antium (5) 1W of iron; Cumae (3) SW of wheat, E,SE of horses; Uzbek (2) 2E of copper, SE of grapes [captured from barbarians]
6 warriors, 7 praetorians (+1 next turn), 4 workers, starting to build catapults

built in a far away land: Stonehenge, Pyramids, Parthenon, Great Light House, Kashi V
Alex: 7 cities

lost two low odds battles initiated by barbs (4.4% axe on axe) otherwise my praets handled them
razed city (Burgundian) that would have kept me from using the fish, then barbs rebuilt it in same spot :( (now with archers)

Kinda exciting game. Stole two workers from Alexander but one got eaten by a wolf. Decided to have a cease fire with him. Bad mistake.

Once his copper was improved he attack with one archer and one warrior. I only had a warrior defending my iron city.
He captured it and I only had 3 preats that was moving to take it back. But there were more archers and axeman coming to intercept.
I gathered two preats and two warriors to attack the city. that turn the warrior upgraded to an axeman.
I attack the two archers and the axeman. Loosing a 60% and then a 80% chance to take the city.
Next turn I took the city and my preat had 0.8 health left.
Alexander had an axeman and an archer two steps away that decided to attack my capital and die.

Exiting game so far.
