GOTM 116 First Spoiler (Montezuma)

Use this thread to tell us what happened in your game, up to 1AD! How did it go? Did your jaguars annihilate anyone?

Stop! If you are participating in GOTM 116, then you MUST NOT read this thread unless EITHER
  • You have reached at least 1 AD in your game, OR
  • You have submitted your entry

Posting Restrictions

  • Please do not disclose ANY events or information gained post 1 AD.
  • Please do not reveal your final result if that happened after 1 AD.
  • Please do not discuss the location of resources that may not show up before 1 AD. (Iron is OK, coal and oil are not)
  • Please do not reveal names or locations of any civilization not accessible by galleys.
  • Do not post any savegame file from the game. Discussions and screenshots are fine but not actual games

I don't remember where I was at 1AD. Can't check where I was because I can't load the latest save. I get the good old complaint about modified assets. :wallbash: It's been too long since I last encountered that and none of the fixes I tried worked so I may have to abandon the game.
Any advice on the modified assets related load failure?
I have not modified anything in Civ4 and only the last playing session saves refuse to load. However that's still far too many game turns to even try to replay.
And the assets checker only shows the usual errors, such as missing some file and also extra file with name identical to the missing one, that's been there since the beginning. And a lot of files missing in BtS. (Assets checker does not understand Civ4 Complete and shows some things as missing when they are only in different named folders.)

Hi High King J.J., sorry to hear of those problems. That sounds extremely odd for a save to throw that error up mid-game. Can you submit your latest save - the one that won't load - as if you're submitting a retired game for the competition? I'll take a look at it to see if I can identify anything (no promises that I'll succeed) and also then 'cancel' your submission so it doesn't stop you submitting the final game if we do find any way for you to play on.

Oh - and - if you have played well past 1AD and you have a pre-1AD or 1AD save that does load without giving an error, there's no problem as far as GOTM rules are concerned with loading that save to look at your situation (if you want to post about the game in your spoiler). The only restriction is that, having loaded that game, you can only look - you mustn't start moving units etc.

I submitted the latest save as incomplete/retired. Thank you for looking into this.
However don't waste too much effort on this, it may just be that I updated an Adobe Flash plugin or somesuch after I quit playing last time. Or because I had to replace the .ini file once again because the game sometimes overwrites and replaces it at random times. Or because I ran an antivirus scan (clean, of course). Anything might cause this problem, once years ago I just shut down and rebooted and the problem vanished (no such luck this time). I think it's just the price we pay for using Windows.

Played a peaceful start. Built The Oracle, missed The Pyramids by about 50 Hammers, and built The Great Lighthouse. The missing Hammers from The Pyramids led to a 100% Science Rate for quite a number of years, up to the spoiler date and beyond.

I'm afraid that I've played a bit of a terrible start, with only 4 Cities to show for my efforts. I wonder how much of a difference that missing Pig Resource makes (or was there more than one missing Pig Resource?--the game description seemed to imply that there might be more than one, but the Challenger saved game certainly has zero).

I'm interested to see if I'll be able pull off a Conquest win... No City Razing certainly lends itself more toward a Domination Victory, so it will be fun to try otherwise.

@High King J.J.
Perhaps your shortcut link to the game is no longer set to be run as Administrator?

You can try the Help with installing BUFFY thread for other ideas.

It didn't take long to figure out I was in a relatively isolated starting position. At least my first city was resource rich and had flood plains. I saw the other continent just south of mine, and while I planned to expand there by researching sailing, being spiritual I opted to dive into religious tech first, founding Buddhism and building the Oracle. I built my second city in 2160BC at the northern tip of my starting continent since that was a resource rich spot and would give me a second wine I could later trade. I obtained sailing around 300 BC and made a crucial decision to forgo further expansion on my own continent in favor of founding a colony on the new continent to my south. By 350BC I was firmly planted on that continent with a northwestern city near a valuable copper vein. Met the Spanish, flowering them with peaceful overtures, but as my galleys started exploring new waters, I secretly plotted to conquer them completely as the new millennium dawned.

Updated to Windows 10 (yes, I know. Better wait a couple of months). Now I can't continue on GOTM 116 because of the SafeDisc and the missing secdrv.sys. Is it OK to move the save files to an old computer with Windows XP and continue on that computer?

Yes, it's fine to swap to a different computer while playing.

Congrats on (probably) being the first person to try a GOTM on Windows 10. I guess that means us staff people will have to figure out what needs to be done to play on Windows 10.

BOTM should be OK (at least I could load the save files) as it does not require a CD. Steam versions might also be OK.

There is also a problem report on Civ fanatics tech support.
