I've been playing on and off for a while now, and as the month-end approaches without a spoiler thread I'll start it. Maybe one or two other players are tackling this, but maybe there's a wind-down at least for the northern summer.

The game began with usual exploring, new cities and and a few not specially eventful huts. I enjoyed the city names, but some have the same abbreviation as others, and their unfamiliarity means I guess this must be my first game as Babylonians. By the time my foreign minister woke up we were supreme, and I expect that will be the case for most people here not playing OCC.

Well anyway what of the start position? It's always nice to have a 4-special so close to hand, but black clicking (not everyone does this I know) reveals a lot of nothing. Our continent seems to stretch to the east, mostly north-east, but if there's anything within trireme range I seem to have missed it. I think there's rather a lot of ocean.

Which is not a bad thing at all on a large map.

I decided, partly because of doing a spaceship last time, and partly because it looked to offer an interesting but achievable challenge to try "early conquest". I note there are no re-spawns which will help the closing stages. I have a little experience of "EC", particularly from my only gold star (GotM 129) whose results came out recently, but this would be different with the large map and more interesting terrain.

And so it proved. I found it much harder. It takes a lot longer because of the distances. How much trade is appropriate? I am needing a lot of ships and I seem to get them on the wrong side of continents too often. The action moves far away from the home continent as time goes on, leaving your first uncorrupt cities less effective - the problem of long supply lines. And judging strength is tricky: I sent one force - I thought it was strong enough - on quite a long journey, only to have it virtually destroyed by the defence. I suppose it's a game made for Peaster's skill and careful planning of how, when and where to conquer six civ's as dispersed as this.

I expect I will get there, but it has been no means as smooth a journey as GotM 129, and it can still get tricky as the technologies the others have continue to get better.
Years ago I had dragoons to take a walled capital defended by musketeers and ended up experimenting with seige tactics - sitting on all the surrounding squares. Let's hope we don't get to that this time!

Of course I could switch to a more conventional growth and spaceship plan. As the purple (key) civ are still in - in fact they're the strongest rival with 10 cities - maybe I'll do that if there's no game for July?

To 1000 BC

Is it worth one move to get to the four-special site - probably not with no grassland, no need for v large city - better to plan to have two cities around here.

4000- Found Babylon (11,59). Raise bit of money and put worker on fish to start.
3950- Start CoL. Worker moved for size 1 trick.
3450- Discover CoL -> CB
3200- Found Ur (8,60).
3000- Spanish destroyed by Sioux - so now we are six.

2750- Hut:50g.
2550- Discover Mapmaking -> Monarchy.

I'm currently well beyond 1000 B.C., but I can at least post my log to this point. I admit I'm not too sure about how much I should post. I do know that I'm not happy with what I chose to note in this log and what I did not.

I didn't do much black-clicking, but I did make the same discovery as Inkerman: isolated continent for us to use. I decided to avoid the problems with attempting early conquest on a map with this scale and transportation issues, and am instead aiming for a spaceship victory.

3900 – Babylon founded (I went for the 4 special site)
3700 – Warrior (for quicker exploration--size 1 Settler was probably a better option)
3600 – Ceremonial Burial → Code of Laws
2950 – Code of Laws → Map Making (Monarchy not offered)
2900 – Settler

2650 – Hut-->Chariot (Babylon), Warrior disbanded
2450 – Chariot enters hut: 1 barbarian Horseman. Attacked and killed, Chariot wounded to 1 movement
2350 – Map Making → Monarcy, hut-->AT Ninevah, Archer rehomed. Decide I want Ninevah moved 1 square.
2250 – Hut found, Chariot slept to regain 2 movement in case of more barbarians

I don't have a save anywhere near 1000 B.C. Looks like I have 5 cities, 7 techs. I'm sure my treasury was low due to frequent partial (incremental?) rush buys. I don't remember if I built any Warriors for happiness control at this point; if not, the Chariot is my only army. I have 1 Trireme and 2 Settlers.
 
Hi tiornys, very nice to see you here.

As regards how much to post I think our strategic comments and logs to 1000 BC make for good interest. Later dates will work well too; I'll wait a couple of days before posting more of the log to see if more people come along, especially to see if there is another "EC", but don't feel you can't help make the decisions. If your game has points of interest that you want to post by all means let's go there - the 1AD point is one often used - we are into the next month now after all.

At the 1000 BC point, my game is a little ahead of yours. I have a couple more cities and one more tech. The army difference is not so much I think. As you note I have warriors to keep order as much as anything and I have noted over many games that others seem to get by just fine with fewer than me.

The causes of my game being ahead are some that aren't maybe of much interest - the size 1 trick and hut luck - and some that maybe are - choice of when and where to build.

I was lucky in that whilst I was getting on an path technology CB from a hut, you were just getting units. (And my -1050 pop producing trade is really lucky. That is bound to help me in the next period.)

Regarding cities, of course we immediately diverge, with you moving to the 4-special and me founding in situ. (Shouldn't you found in -3950 not -3900 or did you go and look at the special first?) I was reluctant to give up a turn and hoped to get better use of specials in the early game by having two cities rather than one able to access those near the start. You are building a better capital city, that I suppose may become the SSC - not a consideration for me. Actually there don't seem to be any out and out good SSC sites now I look at it, so it may be the best practical one - had the hidden special been on mountains or jungle that would of course have been really good. Whatever, it can certainly be a great production city in time.

Generally you are taking more care in city location, prime evidence being the decision to relocate Nineveh. I don't think I would have done that as I feel early on that numbers of cities are the main consideration. I wonder if relocation is not something for later on, when choice of site does begin to matter more?

The approach of more but less good cities can result in a less effective layout. The game has ways of penalising more cities until the later government types, and there is less value to be had from city improvements. This game for me has been so far a rather extreme example of building settlers, caravans and wonders rather than improvements.

I'm playing! The map for #143 lokked terrific, but I didn't want to spend a lot of time on a huge game and there wasn't any other option. Neither an easy way out or a shortcut home ;), so I took a break.

As for the current game, I don't think the very start would make much difference. I moved my settler to the 4-special-site and didn't use s1 because another city (if even possible) would cause a lot of interference and while working fish I get 1 more food and 2 more arrows, thus doubled science.
For strategy, I didn't really have a detailed plan, playing anything "early" successfully would be a masterpiece, so I went for the usual expand-explore-monarchy-Marco. I'm still not sure about the end, but it will either be landing (with a fast instead of a big ship) or high-tech-conquest.

As noted in my post above not too much happened in my game 1000 BC to 500BC. Mostly I was getting caravans built after the fortuitous discovery of trade in -1050.

I suspect most of us have played this sort of wargame. As noted in my post I found it harder than other times because of the distances, and I felt it could have been done quicker and more efficiently. Maybe I should have looked to get Magellan for the extra movement, but for alrmost all of this time I was running with 70% tax to fund the war, and not making many deliveries, so there was little scientific advance.

Same here! However, it is summer, so I wasn't in the mood for a high-efficient game anyway. ;) I basically followed the devious strategy of creating a trade-empire and use the money generated from trade to backstab the AI and bribe/subvert away their cities. It took some time to get it going though. And especially Vikings and Persians are hard to reach.

You discovered Navigation in 120 and by 1000 you did not build Magellan?! How come?

I went for Navigation to allow a safe passage to Russia via caravels (and skip LH, saving those vans for Michelangelo), so the availability of Magellan was just a side effect. Other wonders (SSC and Leonardo) seemed more important by then and a few more ships in the chain are way cheaper than Magellan.

That doesn't mean I am totally confident about the efficiency of this plan though... ;)

And that was pretty much my conquest strategy for the rest of the game: Attack the capital, bribe the others (except for some spanish cites after they had switched to democracy). I didn't hurry though, kept on trading with colonies and unconquered empires and eventually had all wonders. Furthermore, there was a lot of practicing the art of unblocking dye supply and oil demand in Wsedfu. And I even got two Uranium freights delivered! :eek:

I am planning to use Zero Turn Revolution technique, which was recently discussed int the forum, to stay in Democracy a bit longer while eliminating rivals. I ran some experiments last night and it looks good!
 
I did use the zero turn revolution for the final phase of the conquest and it worked as expected. Nice technique. I usually let the AI build the statue of liberty but this technique makes it more valuable. Still there are so many great wonders to have in mid game that it is far from a top priority.

At this point there was only a single non-capital Sioux city left with a spy ready to bribe it away but I did not want to end the game in anarchy so I played a few more turns.
