Well, that was really a perfect site for OCC! I just wanted to have a little look into it while still playing #144, but then it was just totally dragging me in! Until things started to look some kind of terrifying and it was time for a break...

I played my game almost a month ago. It took me less than a week to complete. I was able to play for most of the day on July 4. I started the game early in the morning and made it thru 1300AD before stopping for the day.

Huts were very good, although the first 3 techs were off-path. The early huts gave me a number of fast units which allowed more hut popping. 27 huts were popped during the segment below, I got 7 units (all NON, 4 fast), 8 tech, 8 money, 3 Barbs and 1 Weeds.
Of course, with all the techs from huts, it made the cost of discoveries continue to increase. I only fully researched 1 tech (the first, Bronze Working) prior to 2000 BC. I also traded for 2 techs and got 8 techs from huts.

That could be a german holiday as well because of this.
On the subject, nice game of hut-popping! As I mentioned, I didn't want to risk monarchy, if I knew it would take me directly to republic, I would have chosen otherwise. ;)

I started last week and adopted the hut popping strategy. I would like to say this was a key part of the plan, but that wouldn't be true. It seemed obvious to set the horse off to meet people and it happened to pop a hut, which yielded another horse. And what else can you do with horses except send them off after huts?

Looking now at the starting map I think there are 34 huts on our home continent (including the mandatory fast unit one by the start position.)
And I seem from my notes to have popped 31 of them.

11 technologies
8 units
3 barbs
4 25g
2 50g
3 weeds

The game has thus moved on rather quickly. I currently have almost no capability for research as the tech cost is very large compared to the resources of the city of Hope Springs (est 4000BC.)

Curious. Something I've never seen before.

Had a destroyer abroad, shelling the enemy coast. Next turn - it's gone. What? Oh, it's back in its home port. How did it do that?

Pity no helpful save files to investigate.

Did you just cancel an alliance? After an alliance is canceled, all units closer to your former ally are immediately beamed back to your nearest city.

Major - thanks for the explanation, you are right. The ally cancelled rather than me and the ship was a long way from them, but it would have been closer to them than to me.

Wow, Philosophy from a hut gives Republic in 3300 BC. I thought I did well to get it in 2250BC. It will be interesting to see how much of an advantage it will really be.

During this phase of the game, I was still exploring but huts were few and far between. Only 3 huts were encountered, 2 yielded Units and 1 gave a Tech.
8 additional techs were acquired during this phase. 1 came from the previously mentioned hut, 5 came from trading with the AIs and 2 were actually discovered.
I also built my first two buildings (library and temple) and delivered 3 caravans at the very end of the phase.

It is certainly a stroke of luck and very helpful in the early game. I am not sure I am the player to fully exploit it though - as I play on I realise I may not have managed the city population as well as I might have done.

It seems like your excessive hut-popping paid off and resulted in a nice advantage compared to my no-more-huts-to-avoid-missing-monarchy-strategy. That made me curious and yesterday I started over with the same strategy for a fast and sloppy-played game. I didn't keep a log but iirc, the huts didn't give me anything directing to republic. I was about to abort until I met the Babylonians in -2650 and they had it all! Republic, Literacy, Laws. Things were great, I had my size-12-city fairly early, played on, even has some 1-turn-advances PURELY BY CITY SCIENCE without any trade income! But at some point I was wondering: Haven't I been further in my orignal game at this time? And I actually was! Don't know if this was the result of basic strategy or careless and bad gameplay in the second attempt though. At least, what I had imy orignal game and didn't have in the second attempt: More alliances (I think I was allied with all other civs) resulting in a lot of gifts, more tech-trade (and more efficient by by-passing feudalism and chivalry), more trades, especially hides (I think our supply runs out with city-growth).
Too bad I don't have a save from my replay between 800 BC and 340 AD, but my original game went on like this:

-900 25g from India, first delivery to Babylon dye(d) 140g
-875 Rep.->Philo
-850 copper(d) to Babylon 140g, revolution

I agree the strategy of large-scale hut popping may not work out best for our OCC objective in this game. But as hinted earlier it may be I am not the person to fully exploit it! As is often the case I now think I should have been more active giving techs to the others.

I have now finished my game and sent the files.

We have already discussed how the extravagant early hut popping in my game was not converted into a large tech lead. Rather than a lot of detail - you've probably seen enough log for an OCC spaceship game by now - I'll just note some key points and provide stats at the 500, 1000 and 1500 checkpoints.

I have already commented about my not getting the city population to grow in the best way.

I was worried about war with the AI in the later stages, so did not mind some tech diversions with military benefits, and we also built a battleship and Leonardo. The idea of the latter was to take my several mobile units to cavalry and deny it to the AI, as well as for points. The chariots never got upgraded. It may have been better to save the resources, but I remember in GotM135 (an OCC Deity game) having enough to build Magellan for similar military reasons and that being helpful, if ultimately unavailing.

The main thought looking back is that I did not appreciate how much advantage was provided by the particular tailored map.

I would be interested in seeing the tech path you have chosen and cashed in vans. That shows a little more than just the naked key point stats.

I'm not too sure about that. Leonardo only works until automobile and I think superhighways should be a high priority, especially in OCC. So I always try to avoid anything on the feudalism->tactics branch and aim for automobile. Here are my next 560 years:

+20 Bridge->San. hides(d)2*228; Carth 100g
60 San.->Invention
140 Invention->Demo
220 Demo(est.)->chem, get chem from America, 250g from Spain
240 Research gunpowder, salt(d)292, rush temple to keep celebrating, Russia gifts Nav.
260 gunp.->Explos.

340 missed physics because of key-civ-shift
360 phys.->Steam
420 Steam->Railroad
480 RR->Industry
500 Gift RR to Babylon, ask for gift, get WC
520 Ind.->Corporation
560 Corp.->Grav.

stats at 560 AD:
city size 26; techs: 41; gold: 1795; city: Temple, Market, library, aquaeduct, university, sewer, harbor; Colossus, Copernicus, Shakespeare; TR: 3
units: 1 settler, 1 engineer, 2 ancient army, 1 explorer, 5 vans, 1 trireme

I think superhighways should be a high priority, especially in OCC. So I always try to avoid anything on the feudalism->tactics branch and aim for automobile.

Yes, another thing that slowed my game. Automobile (for Superhighways) was a rather late 60th tech, after Feudalism, Chivalry, Leadership, Tactics, and Communism and Espionage, to name some other off-path diversions that distracted my scientists. It would only have been 59th, but Monarchy arrived at some point I don't seem to have logged. (Pol, Pot had been bypassed.)

Tactics, as well as boosting conserved military if you have Leonardo, is needed for Machine Tools -> Miniaturization -> Computers but it would indeed have been better to get Automobile first.

Ideally someone else develops Tactics, allowing Feu, Chi and Lea to be bypassed.

Maybe I should have given a load of money to the Spanish to end the war with them, or spent loads on some wonder other than Leonardo to get the amount they were demanding down.

During this phase, growth was slow and pretty much limited to filling the box and waiting.

-975 Van (Gold), WLTCD ends, Philosophy -> Bridge Building -> Medicine (660) Supreme again
-925 Trireme
-900 Size 8, Hut -> Horde of barbarians (This was the 1 square island at 43,31, there is no room for barbs), Hides to Washington 192

-850 Van (Food)
-800 Diplomat, Medicine -> Math (690)

-700 Van (Food), meet Spanish, pay 50 tribute, Give Construction and Mysticism, exchange maps, Peace
