GOTM 173 spoiler

My game is behind for a typical OCC game and it is going to last into the 1900s. I think the main reasons are the small number of rivals (fewer opportunities for tech exchange and alliances) and lack of overseas trade. Furthermore, the Chinese are not interested in alliance with me in this game for some reason despite numerous attempts by me when they were worshipful.

I have finished and submitted. It was not spectacular, I kept it a peaceful spaceship game and only bribed most AI cities after launch. Without a key civ and with my not-so-great expansion, double advances were out of reach, so it was only one per turn until the end.
Remarkable was the amount of money I had! When the PD was running it was close to 30k, probably because:
-limited investment in expansion
-high payouts due to not having a key civ
-most cities supplying silk, americans demanding silk
So i was able to launch my full-size spaceship the same turn I discovered fusion.

1000 AD: T2L3S5

1020 AD: Cunaxa II built. T4L3S3.

1040 AD: Bridge Building > Chivalry or Navigation… Choose Chivalry as I still want the trade bonuses. Munich silk (d) to Capoue: 216g. One misclick/reload later, Nankin is corrupted for 358g. Get 68 back and 2 defending units. Not bad. Cunaxa silk (d) to Stuttgart: 192g.

1060 AD: Cremona II built.
Interturn: Greeks renew war.

1100 AD: Chivalry > University. Greeks kill Phalanx in Sydney. Ok, so apparently the mine-on-city trick only works if you have 2 settlers and not one. Hut: AT of Capoue II. The riot factor seems to be unusually high for this difficultysetting… I only have 60ish cities and already 6 black hats?!?

1120 AD: Swap to Sun Tzu since I want to deny it from the Greeks. Domestic route for 66g. Turin II built.

1140 AD: Konigsberg Sun Tzu, Greeks swap to GW. Beijing bribed for 174g, get 31 back.

1160 AD: 4 Greek units near Beijing! Most likely I will have to sack the city, and hope it gets destroyed so they don’t get tech. Gênes II built. 2 vans for 400ish gold. T6L3S1.
Interturn: City of Beijing is successfully razed to the ground. Worth!

1180 AD: University > Economy because I need Adam Smith’s. I said last GOTM that I wanted to test early Demo, but not now. Spend 1080g to bribe Thermopylae right next to Athens: get 81 back, 2 archers and Barracks. Another 160g is spent on a temple from scratch. Since there’s an archer in the way, I’ll build a boat to ferry dips to Corinthe, Delphes and Canton and bribe their cities away. Hut: Mercenaries. Crête II built.
Interturn: Americans develop The Republic.

1200 AD: T4L3S3. I already regret my choice of not going for Demo. Prague wine (d) to Capoue: 160g. T3L3S4.

1240 AD: Brême (d) gold to Hanovre: 180g. Canton bribed for 415g: get 81 back. I’ve literaly been plopping undefended dips right next to cities and they are not killed, which is pretty funny. What is not-so-funny: only defended by one archer. Greeks: GW forces a cease-fire.
Interturn: Americans start GL.

1260 AD: Economy > Engineering not available > Chemistry. Van: 122g. Van: 354g. Berlin starts Adam Smith’s.

1300 AD: Cope’s rushed for 160g. T5L3S2.
Interturn: Americans develop Banking. They are a Republic.

1320 AD: Chemistry > Engineering. Konigsberg Cope’s, finally! Starts a university next.

1340 AD: GW forces peace between Germans and Greeks. Need 1500g to subvert Corinthe.
Interturn: Barbs take a city that I carelessly forgot to garrison.

1360 AD: Munich coal (d) to Frankfurt: 244g. T1L3S6 to guarantee a tech next turn (gold deficit, but I have lots) Vérone II built. Americans already have 4 cities.

1380 AD: Engineering > Invention. Hut: Invention. RIP my trade bonuses that I wanted to cash this turn. Demanded gold gives 129g… eugh. T5L3S2. Need a better system to identify which cities are on which landmass. Adding the continent number after a city name: New naming convention? Greeks: They agree to remove troops. Salamis II built.

1400 AD: >Democracy. Van: 150g. Need 1848g to subvert Corinthe… T6L3S1. It’s a hugely strategic city that gives me access to their entire homeland.

1420 AD: Cunaxa II bribed back for 52g. Van for 108g makes me sad. But it’s enough still. Corinthe subverted for 924*2g. Get 124 back. Solid base, but no Courthouse makes me wonder. OEDO YEAR 1500 AD. Lisbonne II built.

1440 AD: Greek city of Knossos spotted.

1460 AD: T6L3S1. Trying to get the bar completely filled, then one scientist in Berlin should do the trick. Adam’s Smith is rushed in Berlin, don’t need Leonardo’s immediately. Knossos subverted for 455*2g. Get 84 back+Harbour.

1480 AD: Berlin Adam Smith’s, starts Leonardo’s. Hambourg II built. OK, so the “fill” status for F6 is a beaker after the rightmost vertical line on the background world map. Good to know. Hambourg IV built. Hut: AT of Prague II, on an island near the American homeland.

1500 AD: Democracy > Gunpowder. Instant revolution to Demo. I’m gaining 300trade per turn by going from Repu to Demo… YIKES. Guess my suspicions about late Demo not being very good were confirmed if not deadset on Big Trade. Temporary Monarchy. Greeks: They get baited into war. Sparte bribed for 546g, get 102 back. GW forces a peace treaty, but I can still subvert Delphes for 425*2g. Get 62g back. They are down to 3 cities, 2 of which are known including the capital Athens. Americans: accept 250g for a peace treaty. Back to demo! T3L2S5, techrate 2 turns and 400gpt. Time to stop messing around. Van for 123g as its home city is threatened by Barbs (no defences whatsoever and caravan rehoming is disallowed… don’t even know how to do it anyways) Salzbourg IV built. Bergen II built. Venise II built.

STATUS AT 1500 AD:
Cities: 79 Pop: 21,300,000 Techs: 37 (currently researching Gunpowder) Government: Democracy Gold: 114
WoWs: HG, Pyramids, MPE, Colossus, Mikes, JSB, Sun Tzu, Cope’s, Adam Smith’s. Currently building Leonardo’s
Foreign Officer:
Greeks under control. 3 cities.
Peace with Americans. 4 cities.

NOTES: Demo is making such a huge difference for my civ, definitely should not delay it for lesser advances next time unless I’m making serious bank from vans. I’m getting an extra 500trade per turn spent on not luxuries, and lesser troubles in the colonies so I don’t have to waste time building temples. Inner colonies can celebrate, outer colonies keep laying eggs. Can wait for Theo, Chemistry and IW, but the other ones should definitely take a backstep. BB situational, I guess, but University/Economy/Theory of Gravity/Sanitation should not be prioritized higher, even with an SSC. Speaking of which, I’m hoping to get better results out of soon.

Endgame-wise, my score is still unimpressive. This is the most unhospitable map I’ve played in a long time, with all the deserts and tundras ruining fine city sites. Not being able to really trade is also pretty eh. But definitely should have ran higher science. 6tptech is way too slow.

Edit: Also spend more money on vans for Cope's instead of delaying for extra settlers... comparing this game to the currently-played GOTM175

Things were a little happier over here. Trade brought consistently 1 a/t (but never more though, without key civ).

1100 AD: ... so apparently the mine-on-city trick only works if you have 2 settlers and not one.
True. You cannot start to mine a hill you have already built a city on. You have to start mining first and then build the city while the mine is being built. If you wait till after the mine is already done, the mine will be destroyed upon city creation.
1120 AD: Swap to Sun Tzu since I want to deny it from the Greeks...
1140 AD: Konigsberg Sun Tzu, Greeks swap to GW...
Great Wall is far worse than Sun Tzu in the hands of a rival you are trying to conquer. It takes effect immediately and in every city. Sun Tzu only applies to new units. Furthermore, a vet unit has 1.5 times in strength whereas a unit behind city walls has 3 times the defensive strength.
1380 … Need a better system to identify which cities are on which landmass. Adding the continent number after a city name: New naming convention?
I use the default names only for my home island. Then for every new island I pick a real world state/province and name all the cities in that island accordingly. Single city islands get named after real world islands.

Early thoughts: Since this game is deity, the plan is to bypass Monarchy and pursue Republic.

2950: Built 4 on grass/river 73/23.
2800: 2 huts have been unveiled close to my base but with Bronze in progress skipping them for now and will likely pop then once Rep is underway and once cities are built towards them to minimize the risk.
2650: Bronze > Lit.
2500: Built 5 with no incident. Built 6 and 3 cities went unhappy.

2500 bc Summary: Despo, 6 cities, 1 settler, 1 Archer, 2 Warriors. Units in progress: 32 12 2 2 0 0. City sizes: 111. 4 Techs and 30/60 towards Lit. Land improvements: 0 roads (will have 1 in 2400), 0 irrigation. 79,000 sq mi. Treasury: 4.

2350: Lit > Republic (4 / 84).
2250: Built 7, grass/river @ 78/24. Have 1 settler that needs to travel to next city site and we will be able to just barely squeeze out a 2050 Oedo by building city 8 in 2100 without which the beakers would come up 1 short @ 83/84.

2250 bc Summary: Despo (Will have REpublic in 2050), 7 cities, 1 settler, 1 Archer, 5 Warriors (6th next turn). Units in progress: 30 8 5 2 0 0 0. City sizes: 1111111. Martial law: 5 of 6 units are keeping the cities safe (6 of 7 next turn) and only 1 unit is out exploring. 5 Techs and 27/84 towards Rep and in this instance we will open no huts until completion of Rep in 2050. Land improvements: 2 roads, 0 irrigation. 85,000 sq mi. Treasury: 17.

2100: Built 8, grass/river @ 66/20.
2050: REPUBLIC > Currency (0/96). Tax rates for this first turn: T 80 / S 20 / 1 size 2 Elvis. 5 huts are visible. All martial law military is maintained to transition into lots of needed exploration and we now have 1 Archer and 9 warriors exploring. 4th Hut: Map Making.
2000: With 2 cities having reached 20 food in the box, we will have 3 size 2's next turn and Lux is increased to 30. T shifts to 70 yielding 34 Coin and Elvis is no longer needed. 5th hut: Sup Chariot. Two warriors are disbanded within cities. Built 9 on buffalo 72/18, a low food high shield city which will build a trireme. This triggers an unhappy size 1 which for now will remain unhappy for a short time until it is worth the sacrifice to shift to L 40. 5th Hut: Supported Chariot.

2000 bc Summary: Republic (2050), 9 cities, 0 settler, 1 Chariot, 1 Archer, 6 Warriors. Units in progress: 30 15 11 9 8 7 5 3 0. City sizes: 1 size 2 (3 size 2's next turn), 8 size 1's. With 9 cities, 0 Settlers and Republic, this is a fairly close game vs Major Advantage with 7 cities, 4 settlers and Monarchy...

Vs: Major Advantage: Stats at 2000BC:
Monarchy, 7 Cities, 5 techs Treasury: 125.
Units: 4 settler, 6 warrior, 1 Archer, 2 horse,

1950: Barb trireme inconveniently lands directly next to cap and our civ must scramble which disrupts fastest possible expansion. Our Archer is near enough to step next to cap and 19 shields in city 2 are rushed to 30 for a Dip. 6th hut: Pottery.
1900: Single Barb Archer disembarks next to city 2 and we do not have the necessary 61 coin to bribe him. Dip moves out of city 2 and re-supports in cap. Archer which is supported by empty city 2 steps into cap from the other direction and also re-homes, leaving size 2 city 2 with no supported units to be sacked next turn and bribed back. 7th hut: Sup Archer and an exploring warrior from the same home needs to be disbanded.
Pre-1850: Size 2 City 2 sacked by Barbs.
1850: City 2 is re-captured and bribed back for 26 coin. Overall the transaction was a bad one having lost a Citizen, a dip, 26 gold, 3 shields in progress and a bit of pillaged coin all of which is minimally offset by gaining an archer.
1750: Built 10, grass/river 77/27. Lux increased to 40, T 60.

Income: 31 gross shields, 22 net, 29 Coin, 0 beakers. 7 Techs and 8 / 120 towards Currency. Land improvements: 2 roads, 0 irrigation. 125,000 sq mi. Treasury: 38.

1500 bc Summary: Republic (2050), 11 cities, 2 settler, 1 Trireme, 1 Dip, 1 Chariot, 3 Archer, 4 Warriors. City sizes: 5 size 2's, 6 size 1's. 1400: Built 12, coastal grassland @ 64/22with whale. Built 13, coastal grassland @ 84/24. Lux to 60.
1350: Met China, needed to see what else they might have including hopefully currency, so i received Masonry in trade which is all he had, gifted Rep and misc to worshipful, traded maps. 10th hut: island Nomad.

1000 bc Summary: No Wonders and none in sight still in need of expensive Currency (8/187) and slightly more expensive Trade (0 of 216), but we do have Masonry and Pottery for 2 key wonders once we sacrifice the 400 gold income to complete the research. Republic (2050), 19 cities, 4 settler, 2 Trireme, 3 Dip, 1 Chariot, 3 Archer, 1 Warrior. City sizes: 8 size 2's, 11 size 1's. 27 Heads. 50 Power index (Heads + Cities + Settlers + Caravans). 900: Built ssw22 on oil @ 69/33. Built ss23 @ 72/37 coastal grassland with 2 fish. Final warrior is disbanded inside this city. 14th hut: island 6 Nomad. Able to reduce Lux here from 60 > 40 and increase Coin income from about 50 to about 75. Negatively affects 1 city as the size 1 built on ore with an ocean square will go into riot next turn, but gameplay is optimized by losing 4 shields to gain 25 coin.

900 bc Summary: No Wonders and none in sight still in need of expensive Currency (8/217) and slightly more expensive Trade (est 243).
