GOTM 20 Final Spoiler

Why do the domination population limit and the diplo percent of votes needed for victory (which is also population based) change? What is the driver? The domination pop limit in my game went from 60% to 70% and back down to 61% with some different values in between.

I also experienced a shift in population limit (from 60% to 70% back to 60%).

The limit peaked when I only had Hatty left, and shrunk when I started taking her cities. It was not related to the number of AI....

Mine peaked and shrunk in the same manner, with only hatty left.

Might this be a consequence of a delay of 1 turn in the statistics you get in the victory F8 screen?

If you count the pop of each city in the map, it doesn't match with the data in that screen, but the next one does.

So when big cities change hands, there are big inacuracies in the percentage showed.

Just to be clear, it wasn't the percent of population that I had that peaked and shrunk, but the percent of the population required to win a domination victory.

My initial focus would be to hook up horses, pump out Immortals and take out my weakest neighbour. Persepolis was found on the hill, and Parsagadae near the horses. Once I had about 5-6 immortals, I decided that Roosevelt could be subdued before he could hook up copper or iron. So, in 1920BC, I declared war on him. I captured Washington (which was Buddhist) and New York with minimal loss, then converted to Buddhism. Roosevelt no longer posed a threat, so I left him with a city, and he gave me a bunch of techs. I found Susa to the SE by the seafood which I intented to be my initial Great Artist farm.

In 1240BC, I had to declare on Gandhi, he was close to hooking up his SW iron. I capture Bombay and Madras and decide I have sufficently crippled Gandhi for now. I now also control a Jewish city, so my collection of religions is growing - hopefully I will found Confucianism soon and then I will start missionary spamming. About this time I meet Hatty and am glad to have a friend to trade with - the others don't really like me (Even Mansa is hesitant to trade techs!). Eventually convert to Hinduism when it has spread to please Mansa - for him only to discover Code of Laws one turn later (and one turn before me!) and then he converts to Confucianism!! :crazyeye:

Builder mode starts to set in. In 325BC i build the Parthenon, which will be handy for my Artist farm, which I am anxious to build the Globe in as soon as possible. Hatty founds Christianity. I keep a couple of cities religion free in the hope that Confucianism or Christianity spread. In 300AD, there is a danger that Gandhi will hook up his NE iron, and maybe worse - his ivory, so I declare again. He has horses now, but I should be able to deal with them. I raze Calcutta and Lahore. Taoism is found, 2 turns before I learn Philosophy - will I never catch a break?! In 780AD i build the Globe and can get five artists on the go in Susa. With Pacifism, Mercantilism, National Epic and the Parthenon, artists are soon falling out of Susa faster than I can use them. I capture Delhi and Jaipur, and Gandhi is practically finished now. I sign a peace treaty.

Roosevelt is slightly in the way again now, and he has couple of towns I can use for spreading religions and temples. So I declare in 1050AD and take his two cities, eliminating him. Again, I miss Liberalism by 2 turns, which really makes want to declare on Mansa right there and then!!! But I know that a war with Mansa could really ruin me and let Hatty run away for a space victory, so I put away my sword. For a little while anyway - in 1160AD i declare on Gandhi for the last time intent on exiling him to his tiny island in the western sea - i achieve this in 1290AD.

I had been under the impression that I was going to need 9 cities to ease my cultural win - I had no idea I only needed to 2 temples per cathedral on a small map!! I felt daft, but still, I'm glad I was the largest civ - I don't think Hatty or Mansa dared dared to attack yet even though both were probably militarily superior and could have hurt me. The missionary, temple and cathedral game began in earnest. Mansa and Hatty even helped out by
spreading Confucianism and Chrisianity to my cities with their missionaries. My chosen culture cities were Persepolis (as my capital usually is), New York and Washington (with their commerce/cottage potential). As soon as I could switch to Emancipation and Universal Suffrage, I did.

I kept researching, until I could build Cavalry and Rifles (to keep Mansa from doing something silly), then took the plunge and diverted 100% of my commerce to gold. I rushed the Taj Mahal in 1555AD with an Engineer which gave me a nice boost to my treasury for rushing my cathedrals. Culture was then set to 100% (my gold deficit eliminated by merchants and wealth in other cities). I built the Hermitage in Persepolis to match Washington's culture/turn (which was mainly derived from settled artists). I even timed a
Palace move to New York (whose culture mainly came from Great Works) in 1795AD to give it a chance to catch up with Washington and New York.

Persepolis eventually became Legendary in 1838AD. New York and Washington followed in 1842AD and 1846AD. I was very pleased with the short 4 turn interval, much better than I have managed with my other cultural games.

Fun game, thanks!!

Game Class: Challenger
Victory Condition: Diplomatic Victory in 1924 AD

A few turns prior to 500 AD, I'd reduced Roosevelt to one city, which I had reported in the first spoiler.

After 500 AD, I took on Mansa. I planned to attack 3 of his cities at the start of the war with 3 separate armies. Thanks to having Roosevelt's territory and thanks to Mansa not having a lot of culture (Gandhi and Hatty had founded all of the religions between them), it was easy to invade Mansa's lands from multiple points.

However, I was stuck with my army of Catapults, Axemen, Immortals, Spearmen, and the odd War Elephant.

Mansa was just beginning to field Musketmen and Cavalry.

Fortunately, two lucky breaks while defending from Cavalry with my War Elephants either killed off the Cavalry or else left it with less than 4 hitpoints in a city which I was going to assault on my next turn.

So, the first three cities fell into my hands (two to the North West of our capital and one slightly North East of Washington). Mansa was left with his capital of Timbuktu, two cities to the East of his capital, and one city on Hatty's eastern coast.

Still, it took me a lot of time to make further advances. Most of my forces had been obliterated in their attacks or were spread thin, in order to defend my new cities.

I kept up the military production and was eventually facing Grenadiers and Cavalry. However, after 12 or so suicidal Catapults assaulted a city, even an Axeman could fare well against those kinds of units, so I eventually persevered and took over Mansa's remaining cities on this side of the continent. I gave him peace and let him keep his last city over near Hatty. Hatty, though, wasn't as kind to him and she eventually eliminated Mansa via a cultural flip.

In my game, all 7 of the Religious Holy Buildings were created. After creating these buildings, Hatty and Gandhi received about 6 or so additional Great Prophets between them. I'm not positive what they did with those Great Prophets, but by the high number of Golden Ages, I'm pretty sure that most of them were "burned" in this manner. "Burned" might be better classified as "burned out," as the Great People likely slaved away, working hard overtime hours, just to bring success to their respective Civs.

With all of the game's sources of Copper under my control, I was able to hold onto my monopoly and slightly delay the construction of my opponents' Spaceship parts.

Still, my race for the stars was for naught, as I was too far behind technologically to be able to trade my way back into the game.

I'd delayed the prospect of war with Gandhi or Hatshepsut for so long, thanks to my protracted war with Mansa, that such an enterprise would not have had any chance of success.

Gandhi would have won the Space Race in 1925 AD (Turn 335), one turn later than I received my Diplomatic Victory. I found out this fact after submitting my game and reloading prior to calling the Diplomatic Victory vote. Talk about cutting it close. 1925 AD was when I would have learned Rocketry, the tech which allows you to begin work on your Apollo Program. So, had I not squeaked in the Diplo Victory, I would have been "skunked"--not been able to have started my Apollo Program by the time that someone else launched their Spaceship.

I'd only just edged Hatty out by 4 votes in order to become a candidate for Secretary General, so I really was at the end of the rope when I was elected to the position. My first resolution, of course, was to try to elect a world leader. Thanks to Hatty's vote of confidence, I sailed to victory with a comfortable 313/469 votes, where only 290/469 votes were required. I guess that it was Hatty's way of snubbing Gandhi for having the gall to try and reach the stars before she did.

A +3 relations modifier with Hatty from our mutual military struggle is what won me the game. Thanks, Roosevelt, for being such a good sport in our end-game fictitious war! Well, maybe you were trying, but I certainly wasn't taking your military might very seriously, what with it consisting of a Catapult and 2 Riflemen. I knew that there had to be a good enough reason to keep you in the game!

Special thanks also go out to Gandhi, for being such a Wonder-monger, especially in regards to building the United Nations. Had I built it, he still would have been my Diplomatic opponent at the end by 4 votes, thanks to him having culturally absorbed and subsequently grown one of my cities, but the timing might not have worked out if I'd been forced to hand-build it or rush-purchase it.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to write spoilers!

Finally, thanks go out to the staff for making this activity not only possible, but also extremely fun!
