GOTM 32 Final Spoiler

Just after 500 AD I sent my modest army to the east to take Orleans, unfortunately I managed to kill all but one of the defenders and lost most of my army, and Saladin took it with two units in the next turn, this made me very sad, but it was my own fault.

There were many wars in this game, which I was very uninvolved with, I'm not sure why noone crushed me. Louis was destroyed in 995. Alexander finished off Isabella in 1232, then everyone ganged up to take down Hatshepsut in 1550. and I managed to sneak another city in her former lands, as well as another off on an island to the east.

Sal offered me a defensive pact in 1622 because he loved me so much, I accepted since he was about ten times the size of me. This worked out well because Alexander declared on me in 1813, had I been on my own it would have been game over then, as it was he took 2 of my 4 cities then got nuked off the planet in 1852. It was actually game over in 1862 when Saladin launched his spaceship, but I survived to the end, I'm not sure that's much to be proud of, but its all I've got. :) One could say I got close to a conquest victory with only two rivals remaining, but that would be pushing it a bit far. :p

Had a decent start and was not attacked early on.

I was doing well and in the 800s AD I started a war between Egypt and France. Several turns later I moved in to take several French cities. I had initial success but then French cavalry appeared on the scene. This was frustrating because two turns earlier I traded some tech for gold when I could have traded for engineering and pikemen.

I still managed to capture two cities but had very high losses and France recaptured one of the cities. With my army decimated I had to give France back the second city and sue for peace. The next turn Persia attacked with a stack of cannons and grenadiers. Game over.

After my fortunate start, I continued to spam units and slowly roll my way to a domination win. Better than WOTM18 since there was no Asoka to deal with (and untimely vassal decisions).

Anyone else manage to scrape a victory?

I managed to get a spacerace victory on my (unsubmitted) 3rd attempt. Yay!!!! (My real entry finished long long before 500AD). But since we're going to have a separate thread to discuss replays for this GOTM, I'll save the details for that thread when it opens :)

Well done on getting a victory on your first attempt :goodjob: I suspect you'll find yourself in a bit of a minority there

Finally...

I waited for this thread because I basically pussyfooted my way through the game, losing in 1454 AD. Louis DOW'd Hatty three times and I was never able to work up the courage to join in. I founded Antium to grab whatever was lying around (can't remember) near the mountains to the west. I was able to get the iron after Louis took the Egyptian city that was previously holding it. I managed to keep everyone relatively uncaring about my existence until Alex DOW'd me, after which I was slaughtered in about five turns.

Congratulations JT! Once you have time, could you please list your tech progress? Did you manage to trade for a lot of techs? Did you lightbulb? In which order did you attack the AIs? What units did you use to attack, and what were the defenses? I look forward to open your save file once the results are published to find out all the details :)

Saladin finally finished his spaceship around 1850. At the end, I had 4 cities, one of which was about to flip despite having expended two Great Artists there, and two were worthless one-tile island cities east of the main landmass. So much for peacemongering.

I never really had very high hopes for this game, but I did enjoy playing it and just trying to stay alive.

As stated in my first spoiler I was doing ok initially and getting ready to make Louis go away for good.

The actual finishing off of France took a while longer than expected (oh, about 500 years or so), the only real sad part about that being the time lost in the attack, since I kept research up and just waited for the right time to attack.

After the French war I worked on my relations with Saladin through to the end of the game. This meant "helping" out in his war with Hatty and acting nice. Sal got most of the egyptian lands and was looking like quite a powerhouse.

At 1220AD I had amassed a couple of nice Cannon+Gren stacks and wanted to go after Alex to remove a lategame problem. Also he looked like he'd get his hands on Military Tradition very soon, and his knights looked like they could become a serious problem. I did some tests vs what I could see, and figured I had enough of an army to at least take a city or 2 and sue for peace. Well.. he had more than enough knights hiding around, he even had an attack-stack with cats and all hiding around inside Sal's territory. All I could to was draft up some defences (only muskets) and hope for the best. I managed to fend off the attack and sued for peace in 1268.

At this point I figured I was in no shape to do anything offensively and went into reasearch mode. Ofcourse.. messing with the greek was probably not the best of ideas and 300 years later I was again targetted with an attack. Fortunately for me I managed to get rifling online and drafted up enough riflemen to take care of any cavalery nonsense alex could come up with. In the end I lost on city (in ancient France) after getting hit from behind by the greek fleet. After the greek war ended I signed a DP with Sal and figured I'd be safe behind that for a while, with Sal being top-dog on all stats.

I eventually managed to put myself close to a winable position. Here's the thing. I managed to save up a GE to hurry the UN. With 5 turns left on the UN, Alex looked to be my opposition with the biggest population. Sal was probably not far behind him. Now, at 1819 AD, Alex decided to attack me, triggering my DP with Saladin.

This quickly lead to Alex pretty much getting wiped out by Saladin. This also meant Saladin took over as pop leader, and in turn also meant I could not win. Ofcourse I can't be sure what Sal would've voted given a choice between me and Alex, but we'll never know.

The game ended in 1854 when Sal won a domination victory.

Diplomatic victory 1782, 13419 points.

After failing to get liberalism by 6 turns I made a beeline for the U.N. This was built in 1736 A.D. with the help of a GE. I lost the first vote because Saladin was my rival and only Alex and Louis voted for me (Egypt had been conquered by France and Spain by Cyrus. I tired to stop Egypt being conquered by bribing France to make peace several times, this failed and was probably a mistake. I would have tried to save Spain if I ever had a spare tech to bribe Cyrus, unfortunatly I never had one.) Fortunatly in the second vote Cyrus was my rival and Salain voted for me so I was able to scrape a diplo victory. At the end of the game my city had been starved to size 5 and only controlled 13 tiles due to culture pressure.

Way to Go Jimmy Thunder!!! I was hoping you would come through on this one. :ar15:

Nice try kudos to you too Bugg123. That was a great attempt! :goodjob:

Congrats to mdy too. :hatsoff: I was hoping to work toward something like that, but -- as predicted -- Alex didn't give me any room for recovery and finished mopping me up in 605 AD. Oh well.

lol! I guess, what with having only two cities and half your resources lacking improvements and all that, you're not going to survive that war with Alex much longer... I'm sure your praetorian in Rome will put up a brave fight against his tank though.

You could always gift your 2nd city to Louis in the hope that, in the unlikely event that you survive long enough for another diplo victory vote, that city won't fall to Alex and so will still count as votes for you. ;)

Domitation short after 1500 AD but on second try after Sal killed me with 2 charriots on the first one around 2500 BC.

My only settled city was on top of the iron were i beat Alex by 2 turns for the spot.
The path was: 2 cities taken from Sal + Mids in first one> Alex's gems city + his capitol> Luis empire - i took his 3 core cities including his capitol. Here the preat were out. I've used a mix of Preat + cats and WEleph. for my army(somewhere before or around 1000 AD). Then i go after Alex and finished him with ease as he was fighting vs 3 civs. Next i attacked Sal (he was big at that point but i was bigger ;)) with grenadiers and cannons - the war was long but i won ofcourse. Then i took the last continental Lous's cities and take Hatty in very good pace using my new Cavs ;).

Overall a very good and winnable diety game. Although i took Mids very early i didn't benefit much from them before 1000 AD because the food was not enough to support heavy whip and specialist in the same time. I've made few blubs - like for Machinary and Eng. but GP wasn't my focus. I started with bline IW then bline Alfa. And even then i was able to trade Alfa for lots of other techs. Next it was Cnstruction (cat + WEle) next CS>paper>Edu>Gunpowder>Chemistry> then i go for cav and THE END :). The Ai stupidness have been presented to me again - most of the time when i attacked an AI i were backward in techs overall but with more advanced military. At the end date Cyrus has even Infantry but he attacked only Alex once throw the whole game. Sal instead of geting millitary techs (gunpowder and chemistry) took Edu, Lib, Banking, Economy and his most advanced troops were cammel archers. What can i say more.

@JT: i don't know the exact numbers(reinstalled windows) but i'm sure my lossed/kill ratio was better than yours. IMO i haven't lost more than 10-15 units overall. That is because i was playing save and wait for the AI to kill his stacks into my fortified troops

A short summary report in response to Erkon's questions:

"Congratulations JT! Once you have time, could you please list your tech progress? Did you manage to trade for a lot of techs? Did you lightbulb? "

At 500AD had techs up to Philo, CS, Metal Casting, Feudalism

500AD Compass (for peace)
710AD Machinery (few beakers myself, get the rest for peace deal)
830AD Guilds (self research)
965AD Gunpowder (self research)
1124AD Engineering (few beakers myself, get the rest for peace deal)
1148AD Chemistry (1 GS bulb + self research)

"In which order did you attack the AIs? What units did you use to attack, and what were the defenses?"

560 AD Declare war on a broken France. Take 3 cities, peace in 710AD. Praets/WE's/Cats vs Longbows/Maces

890 AD Declare war on Spain. Take 4 cities, 1124AD. Knights/Praets/WE's/Cats vs Longbows/Maces/Xbow/Pikeman/Conquistador

At this stage Greece/Spain/Egypt/France are all down to one city. Saladin and Cyrus are powerful. Saladin has more score and more land, but is not as advanced as Cyrus. I choose to target Saladin as Cyrus has a city full of Cavalry and Grens.

I have a bit of luck that Cyrus is at war with Greece but does not have an open galley path to Alex's final city, this keeps Cyrus in a stagnant war so I assume he will not enter into a second war with me, allowing me to send all units toward Saladin.

I see Saladin send a massive stack through my territory on the way to the last Egyptian iceberg city. So I split my units into 3 groups, 1/3 to go demolish Saladin's stack and 2 x 1/3 stacks to begin the conquest of his lands. I delay a few turns in order to get Chemistry right before I declare on Saladin. This gives Saladin enough time to get riflemen.

I declare in 1160 AD. The plan works well and I suicide 7 cats on Saladins attack stack that he sent to wipe out Egypt, and easily manage to kill them with follow up units.

From here it is just a grind into Saladins land with a mix of Grens/Knights/Praets/WE's/Cats vs Riflemen. Cats and Grens do most of the work vs the riflemen. Saladin gets cavalry midway through the war but only builds 3 or 4 since I killed his mounted units at the start of the war and he isn't able to upgrade his horse/camel units to cavalry.

I lose between 3-6 catapults on each of Saladins cities.

France and Spain are destroyed at convenience while the Saladin conquest takes place. 10 Arab cities captured.

1334AD Domination victory.
