Believe it or not, I am still in this thing. I am in the MA, but I think I can add some relevant comments that won't "spoil" anything for Markus5 or others.

I was almost a full age behind in techs too. I scratched and clawed my way to getting a couple cities from the Mongols to establish a good core. I build marketplaces everywhere worth while (corruption) and changed to Rep. I then turned research off and was making aboyt 200+ gpt. If I maxed out research it would take 8-10 turns, but I was able to buy techs for about 800 gold. I saved may turns doing this. Now I am only about 1/2 an age behind and buying techs as about 1000-1200 to buy.
I sneak attacked Korea and got the Ottos to help. Surprisingly, The Mongols, Chinese, English, and the Russians all decided to jump on the bandwagon. I was able to capture a few cities with my 3 armies. The Koreans didn't stand a chance, and were gone in less than 10 turns.
I have virtually no military (but armies help). I am thinking that I should build-up some defences and declare on someone else before I am taken advantage of. Wiping me off would take no time at all for the AI around me.
@ Whoever can answer: I have a couple questions:
1) Is this normal for the AI to leave me alone if I am providing them cash for buying techs? Is the AI smart enough to realize I am a source of revenue and keep me around?
2) Does the AI consider me more of a military threat becasue I have armies? The AI has stopped bullying me for gold and my territory map "or else". I am wondering why they haven't bothered to take me out.
