My scout didn't see much from the western hill, nor my settler who went SE-ish, so I kept on for a couple turns until I found the river plains with the rice and silver in its BFC, which turned out to be fairly good but not great spot. In any case, I don't think I could have done much better in a reasonable amount of time (although I do lust after Cyrus's Pasagarde to my SE with its cows, horse, stone, and silk). My second city went farther east to secure the copper, and also had rice and deer. 3rd city went 1NW of the cows to my capital's west--this was my first coastal city, so I had rather a late start on galley exploration. 4th city went 3N of the 3rd (with deer and not much else) mostly to try to hem in Cyrus, who settled north of my capital to claim the northern silver. I should now be able to REX and claim everything west to the mountains. City pops are 8,5,2,1 and there's a barb city to the west of City#3 that I'm blocking with axes until I can take it with cats.

I've met 5 AIs and am last in score, with mostly similarly dismal demographics, but should be able to make good progress from here. Cyrus is an obvious war target but I'm not ready yet (although I'm sure several of you have already assimilated the Persians .) My sole Wonder attempt so far was the Oracle and I missed by a few turns. Henge, Pyramids, and Parthenon are the only other wonders as of 1 AD. For a Monarch game I feel that I'm progressing rather slowly--I hope that's because our starting lands aren't so great?

Fun map, Jesusin! I'm wary of being spoilerish so I'll wait to see what others write.

I think I settled exactly where Xcalibrator settled.

I saw two good spots going east - one SE with 4 resources and one NE with copper & other stuff. The SE one got taken so I built a settler for the NE. However from here on in it was a disaster story....

1st settler... got built just as the Persians settled NE where I wanted. So I decided to sent him west for a coastal city by the cows. It was only two tiles from my cultural borders so I though I'd save time & send him ahead of the warrior. A stupid idea as as soon as the settler stepped foot outside my cultural borders, they found themselves next to a barbarian archer. Still, on the plus side, I got to see the "barbarians attack settlers" animation for the first time. There are some girly shrieks in there. :p

2nd settler.... OK, taking a warrior with me this time! I make it to the spot & settle it. A barbarian warrior comes along, attacks the city & dies to my fortified warrior. However then a barbarian archer comes along, kills my warrior (despite combat 1 & shock) and razes the city. Grrrrr! Really should take at least 2 units along....

3rd settler (at some ridiculous year)... has a warrior & an archer defending it - settles the city and it stays mine & starts to grow :)

After finding no copper and no horses, I was on the brink of quitting but then I found Iron right next to my capital city. Also I built the Oracle.... I wasn't sure this was such a great idea given my awful start, but now I think it was, for the following reasons...
1) Industrial - so can build it fast
2) I took Metal casting with it - and I'm industrial so half-price Forges :)
3) MC was great trade bait - I was first to alphabet too

In 1AD itself I got my third city.... a fairly poorly placed city 3W of my 2nd city, which was a barbarian city with 3 archers there. The Persians weakend them but it still took 3 of my troops to take out one damaged archer :(

So, my stats at 1 AD are....
Capital city - size 5
2nd city - size 3 or 4
3rd city - size 2 & revolting
1 worker (hey I've only had one freaking city for half the game, 1 small city does not need 2 workers!), 7 or 8 various military troops.

Possibly the most disastrous start of a game I've ever had. All my own fault ofc. I am however only 9 turns from Construction, so the plan is get a load of swords/axes/spearmen/cats and charge at the Persians. They have 6 or 7 cities, but only 3 decent ones, so if I can take 2 or 3 of them I might have a slim chance of getting somewhere. I'm good friends with the (rather weak) Chinese so hopefully I can drag them into it too.

I'll have to try that in another game and turn up the sound! Sorry about all the bad luck, WG. After reading suggestions from better players (such as our beloved map maker), I've lately been putting more effort into posting cheap units to suppress the barbs and I'd say it's usually a good investment. Here's a very helpful post about barb spawning, by the way. This post has a nice screenie. The main points are that new barbarian units can not spawn within a 2 tile radius (5x5 tiles) of ANY existing unit (including other barbs), even if tiles are fogged. Barb cites can appear in fogged tiles, though. Good luck on the rest of the game!

I moved my settler SW then SE, settling it with the cattle and rice in my fat cross, which seemed fairly good. (When I discovered I was next to iron, it was even better.) Hamburg was settled in 2240 BC to the northeast, to grab the copper and silver. Cyrus was gaining a early lead in score, but he only had archers, so I was planning an axe rush until lots of barbs started showing up at my border. (Yes, I needed more warriors fog busting in this game!)

Munich was settled to the west, then my fourth city was a captured barb settlement to the west. After that, I had a lucky break killing a barb warrior and gaining Drama from the goody hut underneath it, which I traded for three more techs. 1 AD finds me at the bottom of the scoreboard, hoping to exploit a war between some of my neighbors. But the world, so far, has been entirely peaceful.

Raged quit. Crap land. BS RNG. Overall poor gameplay by me, although I thought it was good up to a point. Cyrus' settling pattern early was...well...unsettling. Popped HBR from a hut and could not use it soon enough. For some reason it took freakin' forever to get out my first settler while Cyrus was popping then out left and right, grabbing the horse/marble spot just to my East right before me. aaargh! Bribed Qin on Asoka and then attacked Cyrus taking his metals but I got hosed on the odds. Then Asoka attacked me later to my surprise which pretty much ended things. Yet I'm killing everyone on odds. This game would definitely benefit the patient which I wasn't - didn't enjoy myself.

Also, learned that AIs will cross your borders to settle on vanilla.

I'll post more later...but I thought losing 1 city to the barbs was bad enough! OUCH Welsh!

I think my bad start was more down to stupidity than back luck whereas lymond seems to have had more back luck... :(

My game's still going at xxxx AD and I'm still in with a chance, though :)

Settled on the coast between the cow and the FP.

1AD Stats:
Cities: 7 (2 from Cyrus)
Pop: 25
Economy is bad +8gpt at 0%

Did have some exiting moments with the barbs, but when it looked the worst the barb archer decided to pillage my mine instead of attacking my poorly defended city.

No iron yet, but I did find the ring... :mischief:

Must admit I'm baffled at how stating I'm alive at a given year can constitute a spoiler or give any sort of advantage to anyone....

Hi WelshGandalf. There are many reasons to not disclose anything happening after 1AD. For example, If you say you are alive and playing at 2000AD I can make up that AI are not able to launch their space ships at that date, which is very relevant information to anyone still playing the game.

The main reason though, is that it is against the spoilers rules and we all want to follow the rules:

I never thought of that! :)

Was in a bit of a bad mood earlier. Keep up the good work guys. :goodjob:

Challenger Save

I was happy to find Cow and Silver but I missed the Rice, grrrr. Now the Rice is marginalized in such a location that I'll probably never bother to settle a City next to it.

With only 1 Food Resource to grow off of, the start felt very slow. So, I decided that I would Warrior rush by spamming Warriors while the capital slowly grew. No, not Warrior rush an enemy City... just some Warriors to pick off a Worker then have sufficient Warriors to defend from attacking Archers to be able to have a chance for requesting Peace. Cyrus gave me one better than a Worker and I captured a Settler of his.

Only after I'd spammed out 5 or 6 Warriors did I bother to build a Settler... it took 4 Warriors to take down Cyrus' second Archer, so my "rush" was pretty much dying down, anyway, thus the Settler.

Qin decided to stick it to Asoka and they fought a war around 1000 BC, while I squeezed out The Oracle for a Civil Service slingshot (a small number of Cities = low Maintenance = low production but a reasonably high Science rate = worth trying for The Oracle as an Industrious Civ = Civil Service slingshot).

I fed Qin my Stone in the hopes that he'd build me The Pyramids, but he only built Stonehenge with it and The Pyramids were built in a Distant Land. Luck is with whomever hasn't seen The Pyramids built by now, as Industrious would likely still give you a chance of building them. That and the fact that you're probably playing at Monarch instead of Emperor difficulty level.

The Barbs were quite vicious. Pre-1000-BC, a stack of THREE Barb units came at me! The Barbs gave me more of a headache than any of the AIs have done to date.

Once I felt that the Barbs were safely under control (meaning that all I'd been able to build were Military Units and the odd Granary--not even Barracks--in my 3 Cities), I decided to go after Cyrus again.

This time, Qin and Asoka had made up with each other (although they were far from being on good terms with each other), so I was able to bribe Qin into the war against Cyrus. Qin didn't do a whole lot other than pillaging, but he probably distracted Cyrus sufficiently for Cyrus not to make much of a counter-attack on my Cities.

As of 1 AD, the Persians have been elimiated and I own 6 Cities.

I still have yet to be able to sneak in a Barracks, but I did whip a couple of Temples since Happiness has been a major issue. Unfortunately, the Ivory that I "earned" from Cyrus will likely belong to Qin next turn when Qin's borders expand over Cyrus' old land, but my army doesn't have the stamina to go after Qin anytime soon.

The plan from here is to build some infrastructure then hope that Asoka and Qin get into another war that I'll be able to leverage.

Sending out a Galley? Hmm, that would have been a good idea. It didn't happen, though, as I've been too busy with the Barbs and Cyrus on land.

The game is far from mine, as I'll likely soon be facing War Elephants and Longbowmen on this harder difficulty level, unless I end up turtling-up and just building so many buildings that war becomes a mindset of the past.

Another last minute game attempt by me.

Goal: Get the game completed on time.

Settled SE to get the silver in BFC and researched AH while building a worker. Then a warrior and a settler to get the horse site to SE. Finish settler with a chop to speed things up and as the settler approach the horse site, the warrior see an archer and a settler from persia approaching the horse site. So i think, I need to stop him and declare war and put my warrior on a tile to block the movement toward the desert tile thinking that is where he is heading. Well that did not work. He founded the city N of desert tile and I was at war on T31 or 33 with no archery or resources.

Thank goodness for the copper tile to NE of silver.

At BC-AD time, we had 6 cities including the horse city and a very golden city out there. 7 turns from CS. Got MC from the Oracle, which was not a part of the plan, but was available at 9XXBC. I think i will make it easy for my self by going the monger route. So it will be a domination game; just decided.

I am still going strong in the future and alive @ April 2011. I hope it did not spoil anyones game plan.:lol::lol: I have no idea why my wife think i am very sarcastic. :D

EDIT: I have met all AI and they are all fine but that is not going to last long. Particularly chinese since they have this city with a GLH, Pyramids and some thing else taht I want.

The capital built the GLib and a city to west built the Colosus.
