Today i finished

Due to time constraints I did something different. I restricted my self to cities on the original island only. A one island chalenge so to speak.

First the original island was small shaped like Ireland as I predicted. The seed was 23. I foolishly used Multi-player Gold and it cost me several early techs. Also I had the Mongols hostile to me practically the entire game. Greek Allied with me but were usually uncooperative, got a few techs in trade but no gifts. I missed out on Shakespeare had the vans to build it but not the tech. I had no invasions of my island by AI's My only lossess were from boats being sunk by AI or Pirates

My wonders (all built)
Colossus
Maro Polo
Mich's Chapel
Cop Obser
Leo's Workshop
JS Bach
Issac Newton College
Darwins Voyage
Hoover Dam
Manhattan Project
UN
Apollo
Seti
Cure for Cancer

finished by spaceship in late 1800's

I had an interesting game. I was originally going to go for spaceship victory, but foreign cities soon stopped being worthwhile for trade, so I decided to use leo's for a conquest with dragoons. Restarts cramped my style, however, so I decided to wait until past the year 1500 to finish, only I was mistaken when I thought that that year killed restarts. In my effort to clamp down on restarted settlers, I littered much of the map with diplomats to bribe the restarted settlers away immediately, but that was of limited effectiveness given that I had to wait until the next turn to see if they would be restarted. I also learned that the game can still give restarts if you destroy the last civ. All in all, I think my lack of conquest experience and a mid-game change of plans may have hurt my game, but it was fun.

I built my first 3 cities close together to take advantage of the river for 3 arrows. My original idea was to disband 2 of them after they had spawned several more cities, but the size of the island prevented that.

GAME 91-

Interesting Map. Could not calculate with accuracy the location of hidden seeds in the Map, regardless I knew that to build a Sciene City , I need a tile by the Ocean with at least 3 or 4 Specials.
So, I decided to Scout the continent and found the best location at 9.43 ( Jungle ).
Washington was built in 3850, the other Settlers irrigated the City tile, used 1 settler trick to Speed the growth.

I went for conquest, the restarts were a bit of a shock and seemed to go on forever (I'd forgotten how annoyign restarts are). I finished before 1000ad with about 80 cities, casualties 15 crusaders.

It's quite a good map, pity I didn't have time for a landing game as I prefer them to conquest, but It's too hard to finish in a month.

Landed in 1538 AD, Turn 192. Learned a LOT this game and foresee improvements on my next landing. I'm getting better every time I play a GOTM. I think I could have cut 10 turns off of that game easily. I submitted a little late, so I'm just hoping the Duke accepts it. I look forward to the next GOTM. I really am beginning to realize how I need to modify my strategy as I get better and it is more and more of a race against time. I fumbled some of the transitions and screwed up some rush-buys, but I'm definitely improving. I'll post a log tomorrow.

I think 1500 is correct at Diety level. Not sure about others (though 1750AD comes to mind). I think this is discussed in a thread at Apolyton by La Fayette, but most Poly players were obssessed with Diety level only and generally ignored the lower levels. And I can't resist another annoying/elitist/condescending remark ... with practice, you should usually conquer before 1000 AD anyway. :)

Yes, I should be able to conquer the world faster with practice. My experience has been almost exclusively to play through most of the game and be as big as possible, so early conquest is largely new to me.

Log through End of game.
139 - 840 AD - REFINING -> COMBUSTION, Germans about to build darwin, so I tech bomb them, Rush a ton of vans - alternating trade coming. Crap, I'm going to lose mpe to communism
140 - 860 AD - yay, germans pulled theology and communism from dawin. Trucks - 72 G, 31 G, 30 G, dang, barbs, iprb.

That's interesting, I'd never thought before about getting another civ to build DARWINS, I've always built it myself. I suppose it could backfire if they pick techs you don't want, but almost all techs are needed for landing so I suppose there's a good chance they'll pick somethign you want.

That strategy is straight out of Solo's ELG. Whether or not it is worth it to build yourself obviously depends on how the game is going, what difficulty it is, etc. You're right, there's usually a decent chance they'll pick at least one thing that's useful. I'm playing landing on the next GOTM so we'll see how it goes - I plan on playing cleaner and getting a much earlier landing date, since I learned so much from this GOTM. I'm hoping for something like pre-1500, but we'll see how it goes. People like Peaster will still land earlier than me if they try, but I'm focusing on improvement. It's a tough balance between early development and far away colonies, and colony placement depends on the map too. A super far away colony allows CRAZY trade but takes longer to set up. I'm convinced I have to get on that way earlier in the game, get a boat out there and settle some colonies, set up a ship chain. It's such a balancing act playing early landing. I've occasionally thought Leo's would be useful just to shorten the time for the development of a ship chain. We'll see, I'm still learning.

Finally finished. After a lot of trouble on my laptop I finally have most things working again. This game went to as good as I hoped for. It was my first landing game since 6 months. Did some expiremental things like very soon getting the trade game going but I now know that my SSC growth to late because of that. Hopefully better on the next game.

Here is my log.
