Well......

BUMP!!!

Ok, it's coming in a few days. Emporer level, I guess.

If you want a high score, then you need to crush all civs but one and then build lots of cities on all continents, right? And that takes a long time and it can be boring also. I looked at the civ2 GOTM forum and they had some formula for calculating a special "gotm score" where an early finish is given more points. Have you checked that out? I think it's a good idea for civ1 gotm as well.

I agree we should have a bonus system for early finishes. And the details of this system should be known by eveyone before a GOTM is started so that they can adjust their strategies accordingly.

GOTM - game of the month - for Civ2 was the first GOTM and was originally my idea a little more than a year ago. Subsequently Matrix very kindly and enthusiastically agreed to adminstrate it and it has since proliferated and thrived. Together we tried several systems for rewarding early finishes before the current formula was arrived at. It seems to be successful! :)

I just need to find the formula................

It's easy. First find the correspondence between years and turn-numbers for each difficulty level we're likely to play. Then decide the kind of profile you want. Experiment with formulae with a spreadsheet. Check the formulae using past GOTMs as test data. Don't expect you'll get it right first time.

The current CivII GOTM formula is elsewhere on this website - it's easy to find - but I've still got the older ones somewhere too if you're stuck for ideas.

Scoring

Because getting a high score takes so much time, we are going to take the date you finish your game also into account much more than the game itself does. Therefore we have developed the following way of scoring the games for the GOTM:
G = GOTM score
N = normal score
M = maximum number of turns
T = turn finished

Note that we look at the turns, not the date.

Because we have our own (much more effective) way of rewarding an early finish, the bonus score of the game itself will be ignored and the score will be calculated manually by pressing F9 and counting all the separate scores (from population, achievements, etc.) together.

Ummm.... How do I find out how many turns have passed.

P.S. I haven't posted the game yet because I am badly ill. :(

Here's a list I made up a while ago for civ1. I don't know if it's applicable in any other than Emporer difficulty. It isn't finished completely, only up to where the years start going by one at a time, but it's easy to figure out from there.
