I am all ok with having deadlines to be real deadlines (again) from now on.
Definitely, submitting an unfinished game or just abandoning a game are options that are still available then.
Personally, I would have always accepted that in the past, too. And here I out myself, that it was me who asked, and I very much hope: politely asked, about the extension for COTM170. If it hat be 'no', no worries from my side - then it´s no. That is what a deadline is, after all.
Even if we had not been very strict about it in quite a while now, I absolutely see how this can be perceived that we got this to be a (bad) habit... I sure did not mean to bug anyone by my request.
Having said that, what I personally really would like to avoid is, that we try to educate or lecture each other about their personal time management. We are in a (very) long-time, friendly competition here. I have been participating in the one role, or in the other, for much over a decade now. For a long time I only "consumed" this competition, for already quite a while now I also contribute designed games to it. There were times in these 15+ years, when I had a lot of playing time, when I even could compete in monthly games, as they then were. There were times, when I did not participate at all. With two kids and three jobs I have a situation today, that the length of a XOTM game regularly heavily exceeds my total spare time for Civ3 in a whole year´s quarter. I like to still participate, every now and then, if I can, but neither for myself nor for the competition it is a catastrophe if I cannot. But I am saying this, because each of us has his life and his own time limits - so, let us straigthen out the rules, ... and not judge how good or bad the time management of anyone is.
With my highest regards for everyone who (long-time) contributes to the XOTM,
