As sort of a first and customer service enhancement we have decided to release the basic mod file and map file for Gotm16-Rome.

This will allow players to use the map for other purposes and also to use the basic rules set to set up other "Latin Mod" type games.

Players can also load the sceanario and generate an exact copy of the game that can be played on another difficulty level if they would like to use that setup for proactice or diversion.

-- Hope you all had fun seeing that Rome really wasn't built in just a day!!!

Awesome. Just goes to show the great amount of work put into this map, thanks to everyone involved. If only I had looked at my screen sideways, now I can really see what you meant. One question, was there a reason for picking the Americans as the buffer between Japan and Germany? Or the makeup of civs in general?

Actually yes on many counts.

In 2002, the maps were randomly generated and in many cases we had civs that were randomly being excluded from the play matrix (no pun intended). As and example, in the last half of 2002, one civ was virtually unheard of.

Now we are tracking several variables related to the civ rivals in the game to make sure that the games are different each month in as many ways a s possible while still guaranteeing players that they will encounter some substantial variations in terms of who they meet and who they have to deal with in different relationship roles.

In this specific map, we looked at Rome as a Commercial/military civ and wanted to make sure that the civ specific abilities that were not present in Rome would be represented in the opponents. That left us seeking a combination of 3 near by neighbors who would at least have one occurance of Scientific/Religious/Industrious/ and Expansionist Traits.

Germany was sort of predetermined opponent/nearby rival because of the desire to try and engineer the great Visigoth/Roman conflict opportunity, so that checked off Scientific.

The Americans had not been a nearby neighbor in any of the recent games so they made a good choice to check off two of the desired traits in the matrix. Plus the Americans would be industrious and would potentially be better suited to deal with teh central jungle position. (Note that AI currently is set to play America terribly and also makes horrid use of the Industrious worker trait.)

So the only trait we were left truly needing was Religious.

I just started playing this game over on two levels lower than Emperor, on Regent, and this is great. It's a lot better to make comparisions on starts and the AI expansion/aggression than two two different games like I have tried to when gauging how much more I have improved from starting the gotms.

Of course to get a better gauge I will (sometime) try to play on Emperor.
