Suppose I'll kick things off. I settled in place (good move).

I was all ready to rush someone early on, when the scouting revealed... I was on a land mass of my own. Doh. So what resources do we have..... copper, a reasonable amount of happy/health resources, no horses but ivory. Interesting. Not a mass of nice city locations though. Once I saw I had ivory but not horses, I decided to go for construction, for the catapults and the elephant warriors.

By 1AD I had built 5 cities - the capital, one down south (ivory/seafood), one west of that (copper/seafood), one north-west of the capital (cow?/seafood/fur) and then one on the west coast of the island (desert flood plains).

I was reaching the point of declaring on Saladin at 1AD. Fortunately there was one space on the east side of the continent that was culturally neutral, so I had 2 galleys shipping my army across the 3 squares of water. The army was something like 7-8 axes, 4-5 phalanxes, 3-4 catapults and 3-4 war elephants (had only recently discovered construction). I had high hopes for my elephants - had never really gone in for them before but a strength 8 unit well before macemen should be useful.

I also settled in place. I went a little great wonder crazy, which delayed my expansion on the continent. Athens completed Stonehenge in 1560 BC and the Great Lighthouse in 175 BC. Thus, by 1 AD, I had only built two other cities.

Stonehenge started generating Great Prophets. Since I hadn't gotten any religions yet, I had two of them settled in Athens by 1 AD.

Meanwhile, I had one galley and one workboat exploring the coast of the large continent, which had brought me into contact with Saladin, Elizabeth and Louis.

I went a little wonder crazy like MarleysGh0st with the same result city wise... and MAN did I build my second city in the wrong spot.

"THIS IS a rotten spot for SPARTA!"

So much for the Axeman rush I was going to try.
:crazyeye:

Think I'm going for Culture or Space Race (Probably the former).

Heh, I thought my 5 cities wasn't great :) I don't *think* I got any early wonders though - if memory serves me right I got beat to the Great Lighthouse by about 3 turns

Where did you guys end up putting your second cities then? I agonised over grabbing 3 resources with one city on the south coast, and eventually decided to just get 2 (the seafood and ivory), leaving space for another one on the square 1 north of the copper. Given the lack of decent spaces to settle on the island, I think this worked out OK.

I was a bit disappointed when I realized I was alone on my island, but the warriors I had built to warrior rush a non existing neighbour were good fog-busters. Not everything lost, but still a few centuries behind :(.

I went for sailing and masonry early, then metal casting, got both the great Lighthouse and the colossus. I had a somewhat slow expansion, but I think I was at 4 cities in 1AD with 3 whipped settlers ;).

I don't know how I will be able to handle always war at Monarch (GOTM60) when I'm in last place in a Prince game. :crazyeye:

Wonders went fast. Oracle built in 1040 BC as I was researching Priesthood. Great LightHouse in 400 BC as I am building my lighthouse. I did manage to build the Parthenon in 675BC.

Sent the scout to the plains hill to see if more sea food. Nope, so I settled in place. Good, got the copper. Sparta on hill with clam, ivory, marble, copper.

Just settled third city, on west coast with 2 flood plains and 2 gold hills (not in culture yet). Building the Great Library.

Louis, Elizabeth, Mansa and Saladin are all Jewish. I don't have any religions, but am researching Code of Laws.

All alone would be nice for culture, if I had some religions and if the land was decent. I think I will need to take over some other civ's cities. :D

Planning on a catapult war after I establish another couple cities on my island.

Hello everyone,

havnt played Civ4 in over a year (great game, little time) and now started again with this GOTM. After discovering GOTMs all other forms of Civ seem boring :). Thanks a lot guys for the format! :) I realize how much time goes into this.

I have a couple of general gameplay questions (I am rusty, see above). Why am I asking them here? Well, in the GOTM rules it states I must play the game alone (obviously) and 'getting help' in a way is not playing alone. I assume my questions are OK, because they are very general. But I am asking them here so that a moderator or GOTM-staff can tell me if I shouldnt ask them. So kindly only answer after we have been told that its OK :).

1) for the UN-vote, does really "population" count (as shown in the stat) or is it something like the size of all cities added together. If it is the former, one really big city will help a lot in the diplo victory

2) how can I find out what the population of specific opponents/AIs is? It is not shown in the progress stats (there I only see the beakers, not the population. Or can I calculate the population from beakers? I should think no!). MAybe trade maps, then add up cities?

3) I assume you need 60% on the diplo victory vote

4) how many turns after building UN can I get voted on secretary general?

5) how many turns after that can I call for the final vote/world leader?

Since I need to finish the game tomorrow (hehe) it would be cool if a moderator can tell quickly if its OK for me to ask those questions.

Thanks :).

Since I need to finish the game tomorrow (hehe)...
You actually have until the End of the Day Nov 1; and they calculate the End by (something like) hawaii time. It's quite generous and I often need all the time.
If you go to the Game of the Month page from the civ4 pull down menu, you will see the days/hours remaining for all the games.

I think you can vote yourself the diplo victory in vanilla. (no vassals) The trick would be getting enough population without passing the domination limit. I suppose you could take a razed earth approach...
I think it is more than 60% (70?) but I really don't know.
